SIBLEY CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH The Lord’s Day – August 24, 2014 WE SELECT ELDERS AND DEACONS BY LOT Pastor Roger Bouwman Reader 1: The Word of the Lord concerning the choosing of a disciple to replace Judas . . . “In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering Welcome to the Sibley Christian Reformed Church … about a hundred and twenty) and said, ‘Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be A place to gather, worship, and praise the Lord! fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, “May another take his place of leadership.”’” Morning Worship 9:30 A.M. Pastor: Beloved in the Lord, we now seek God’s selection of the elders and deacons Prelude needed in the leadership, ministry and service of this congregation of Christ’s holy Welcome/Announcements church. Christ alone is the source of all Christian ministry which he has performed through the ages by calling men and women to various offices and forms of service. *Call to Worship —adapted from “The Living Church” Red #290 Pastor: God of the living church empow’r, your ancient might reveal; Congregation: By the Holy Spirit all who believe and are baptized receive a Give wisdom for this crucial hour, and in your mercy, heal. ministry to witness to Jesus as Savior and Lord, and to love and serve those with whom they live and work. Elders are thus responsible for the spiritual well- (Time of silent prayer by all. The pastor concludes with these words: being of God’s people. They must provide true preaching and teaching, regular “In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.”) celebration of the sacraments and faithful counsel and discipline. And they must promote fellowship and hospitality among believers, ensure good order in the church, and stimulate witness to all people. Council Officer: This congregation has chosen the following two people, one of whom will be selected by lot to serve as deacon: Keith Boersma and Leon Runia.

Pastor: Deacons serve by showing mercy to the church and to all people. They received this task in the early church when the apostles designated special persons for the work of mercy (Acts 6: 2 Cor. 8-9). In Christ’s name the deacons relieve victims of injustice. By this they show that Christians live by the Spirit of the kingdom, fervently desiring to give life the shape of things to come. Deacons are therefore to assess needs, promote stewardship and hospitality, collect and disburse resources for benevolence, and develop programs of assistance. They are also called to speak words of Christian encouragement. Thus in word as well as deed they demonstrate the care of the Lord himself. Reader 2: Elders and deacons, together with the minister form the council which leads God’s people in this place in proclaiming good news to the poor, righteousness to the nations, and peace among all. Congregation: Everything in the church will be done decently and in order when faithful persons are called to office and responsibly fulfill their charge. Reader 1: The Word of the Lord: “Then they prayed, ‘Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry . . .’then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.”

STEP BY STEP

He does not lead me year by year, Nor even day by day, But step by step my path unfolds; My Lord directs my way. Tomorrow’s plans I do not know, I only know this minute; But He will say, “This is the way, By faith now walk ye in it.” And I am glad that it is so, Today enough to bear; And when tomorrow comes, His grace Shall far exceed its care. What need to worry then, or fret? The God who gave His Son Holds all my moments in His hand
