1 [1076-1] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION 12 TO NAME THAT PORTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA 13 HIGHWAY 6 WHICH TRAVERSES THE CORPORATE 14 LIMITS OF THE TOWN OF SAINT MATTHEWS IN 15 CALHOUN COUNTY AS THE T. M. “BABE” NELSON 16 MEMORIAL HIGHWAY IN HONOR OF THE LATE T. M. 17 “BABE” NELSON IN RECOGNITION OF HIS 18 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO HIS NATION, STATE, THE 19 TOWN OF SAINT MATTHEWS, HIS CHURCH, AND THE 20 CALHOUN COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND FURTHER 21 TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT TO INSTALL 22 APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS CONTAINING THIS 23 DESIGNATION ON HIGHWAY 6 AT THE MUNICIPAL 24 BOUNDARIES OF THE TOWN OF SAINT MATTHEWS IN 25 RECOGNITION OF THE COMMUNITY AND PUBLIC 26 SERVICE OF THIS DISTINGUISHED SON OF SOUTH 27 CAROLINA. 28 29 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note that the life 30 of the late T. M. “Babe” Nelson of Saint Matthews in Calhoun 31 County serves as a benchmark for those who aspire to community 32 service; and 33 34 Whereas, in his life he served his country in World War II as a foot 35 soldier in Europe, and on his return to civilian life served as Mayor 36 of the Town of Saint Matthews; and 37 38 Whereas, his service to his community and State continued as a 39 member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 40 representing Calhoun County, through his service on numerous 41 boards and commissions, including the post from which he retired, 42 Chief Commissioner of what is now the South Carolina Workers’

1 [1076] 1 1 Compensation Commission and his decades of long service as 2 chairman of the Calhoun County Democratic Party; and 3 4 Whereas, his devotion to public service was exceeded only by his 5 love for his family and for Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church 6 in Saint Matthews; and 7 8 Whereas, the fifteen years that have passed since the death of Babe 9 Nelson have only seen his reputation further burnished, his earnest 10 desire to be of assistance to those whom he was in a position to 11 help and his devotion to his beloved family ever more fondly 12 recalled; and 13 14 Whereas, it is appropriate that some tangible reminder should be 15 put in place to recall to mind the life and service of such a 16 distinguished and beloved son of South Carolina. Now, therefore, 17 18 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 19 concurring: 20 21 That the Department of Transportation is requested to name the 22 portion of Highway 6 in Calhoun County that traverses the 23 corporate limits of the Town of Saint Matthews as the T. M. 24 “Babe” Nelson Memorial Highway in honor of the late Babe 25 Nelson and to install appropriate markers or signs containing the 26 words “T. M. ‘Babe’ Nelson Memorial Highway” where Highway 27 6 traverses the corporate limits of the Town of Saint Matthews. 28 29 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 30 the Department of Transportation. 31 ----XX---- 32
