What We Are Learning About

Summer Term 1 ‘Green For Growth’ What do plants need?

Literacy This half term we will be using information texts to help us learn about plants and growing. We will be developing our skills of asking and answering questions to help us find out interesting facts. Our fictional theme is stories with familiar settings. We will practise our retelling skills and develop our ability to write imaginative stories. We will continue to have daily phonics inputs, building on our learning so far and preparing for the phonics check in June.

Numeracy We will compare and order numbers and solve problems involving counting, adding, subtracting, doubling and halving. We are continuing to use bar modelling and part part whole models to support our learning. We will be counting up to 100 and will be gaining quick recall of one more and one less than numbers to 100. We will also be working on place value of two digit numbers and splitting them into tens and ones.

Science This half term we will be learning about plants. We will find out what they need to grow and thrive and investigate what happens if one of the things needed is not provided. We will be growing a variety of plants/flowers so that we can watch the growing process. We will learn the names of some common plants and flowers and will be able to recognise and label the main parts of a flower. We will also learn about what plants we grow to eat and the journey from farm to fork. The grow ladies (Ama and Zana) will continue to support the children to grow things in the school garden.

PE We are very fortunate that we are having another half term with Project Sport. We will also be doing some dance work linked to growing and using movement to represent growth. Please ensure PE kits are in school on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Computing We will be learning to make an animation of a flower growing. We will be doing simple computer programming using coding software.

Art The focus for this half term will be observational art. We will be looking closely at plants and fruit and vegetables, noticing shades of colour. We will also learn about Vincent Van Gogh and paint our own sunflower. What you can do to help

Take a walk around Marsden and look at all the different flowers and plants. Can you name them? Can you find their leaves, stem, roots and flowers?

Can you make an observational drawing of a flower at home or in the garden?

Can you practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s? Can you get even quicker at recalling number bonds to 10 and 20? Can you learn all doubles to double 10?
