AUDITORIUM Valerie Ware, Librarian, East Islip Middle School, “Famous American Trials (SECONDARY) Collaborative Research Project” Valerie will be discussing an 8th grade collaborative research project she did with the Social Studies classes. She will speak about the initial project, and how, over time, it has changed into ALMOST an inquiry research project. The trials covered were The Titanic Inquiry, Trial of Susan B. Anthony, and The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire Trial. The students researched facts and then assumed the roles of witnesses and attorneys for both prosecution and defense.

BLUE ROOM Linda Lennon, Librarian, Half Hollow Hills High School West, and Margie Hartough, (ALL) YA Librarian, Half Hollow Hills Community Library, “Libraries Working Together” Collaboration between the school and your public library enhances student learning while promoting the value of libraries in the success of a community as a whole. At Half Hollow Hills, they have worked together with their community library sharing resources, ideas and programs. See how they created a relationship and how it impacts their students.

COMPUTER LAB Laureen Andria, Librarian, Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School, “WISER” (ELEMENTARY) Why use the WISER Notebook? Teachers love it because it’s a framework for inquiry learning that makes collaborative lesson planning easy and adaptable. Students love it because it’s a kid-friendly place to record and organize the research process. And librarians love it because it’s fully aligned with our Empire State Information Fluency Continuum.

10:45 A.M.-11:15 A.M.

AUDITORIUM Laureen Andria, Librarian, Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School, “Board (ALL) Policy Development” Don’t let your book selections get caught in a storm of angry parents, controversial editorials, and fire & brimstone sermons (yes, Laureen speaks from experience)! Your Board of Education endorsed selection policies are your safety net to protect your collection and yourself. This is true not only when a book is challenged for censorship, but for all purchasing and weeding choices.

BLUE ROOM Gina Seymour, Librarian, Islip High School, “Librarians and Social Networks” (SECONDARY) Facebook and Twitter can be a librarian’s best friend! Gina will discuss how to use these applications for professional gain. She will examine the benefits (and cons) to having a social networking presence for your school library and also how to capitalize on professional opportunities on your personal account.

COMPUTER LAB Mary Charters, Librarian, Cutchogue East Elementary School, “EngageNY” (ELEMENTARY) If teachers are telling you they have no time to come to the library because of the modules of EngageNY, come back to them with the EXACT lessons you can facilitate for them in the library. Show them which Common Core Learning Standards for that lesson directly correlate to the Information Fluency Continuum. Show them which materials on the recommended supplemental text lists are outdated, out of print, or developmentally inappropriate and give them suggestions for replacements. Use the library to excite students about research by using visuals around the halls and create a Wall of Fame with module vocabulary. This session will help familiarize some of you with the materials on EngageNY and give others ideas of how to get teachers to come to you WILLINGLY!

11:15 A.M.-11:45 A.M.

AUDITORIUM Erin Marone, Librarian, Dayton Avenue Elementary School, and Lisa Martinez, (ELEMENTARY) Librarian, Eastport Elementary School, “Four Square Rotations” Erin and Lisa will briefly discuss their work assisting classroom teachers by creating and planning Four Square Rotations. A Four Square Rotation can be used in the classroom to teach content in lieu of or in addition to using a traditional textbook. The students visit four different centers utilizing resources from the media center and then complete a product of their choice. Erin and Lisa will discuss creating criteria for each center and the final project.

BLUE ROOM Gina Seymour, Librarian, Islip High School, “LinkedIn for Librarians” (SECONDARY) LinkedIn is the world’s largest online professional network. Post your resume and connect with colleagues. Network with others in your field and look for employment opportunities. Gina will help you explore ways to utilize this powerful network.

Sue will share her experience and what has worked for her to stay relevant when teachers are meeting to discuss curriculum changes or curriculum shifts. The last training she attended addressed ELA Module training for grades 6 and 8. She will address any questions about these modules and what she has learned.

COMPUTER LAB Kristina Holzweiss, Librarian, Bay Shore High School, “Tech Tools for Learning (ALL) With Standards” There are numerous Web tools that we can integrate into the curriculum to motivate student learning. These Web tools can be used not only with the CCSS, but also with AASL’s Standards for the 21st-Century Learner and the ISTE/NETS Standards for Students. Librarians can use these tools to collaborate with classroom teachers to create extension activities where students can apply the content they have learned to develop projects that integrate technology. Explore some tech tools to integrate into your lessons.
