Selection Criteria Guidelines for the Matthew Preece & Yeshi Lama Young Conservation Leader Award 2016
Yeshi was part of the WWF Nepal family since 1997. She was responsible for administering, monitoring and reporting on our mountain programs and projects. Yeshi completed her Master’s Degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London, UK and a Bachelors Degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Middlebury College, Vermont, USA. Among her many achievements was co-authoring publications both in English and Tibetan languages some of which are: Medicinal Plants of Dolpo, Amchis’ Knowledge and Conservation: Conservation of Plant Resources, Community Development and Training in Applied Ethnobotany at Shey-Phoksundo National Park and its Buffer Zone, Dolpa: Snow Leopards in Nepal (in Tibetan, with Tulku Orgyen Phuntsok) and Where There Is No Doctor: Building Capacity of the Himalayan Amchi a paper presentedInsert at profile the Rangelands of Matt and Workshop Yeshi organized by ICIMOD, Lhasa in May 2002. Yeshi is survived by her husband and two children.
Matthew was with WWF US since May 2006. He brought to WWF five years of domestic and international non-profit experience and consultancies in India, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, the Caribbean, Ecuador, and Mexico. Mathew received his MB.S. Environmental Science, cum laude from Vanderbilt University and a Master’s Degree in Sustainable International Development from Brandeis University in the US. He was an American national, and is survived by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

In honor of Matthew Preece and Yeshi Lama and their life-long contribution to conservation, WWF has established the “Young Conservation Leader Award” that will recognize young individuals for their dedicated and outstanding contribution to conservation. Recognizing the tremendous loss of emerging leadership with Matt and Yeshi’s untimely and tragic death, through this award, WWF will identify and recognize a new generation of committed conservation leaders to take on the many challenges facing Nepal in preserving its rich natural heritage.
To encourage young promising conservation leaders from Nepal, each year WWF will give this award to two individuals, one man and one woman, who best represents Matt and Yeshi’s interests while at the same time demonstrating outstanding contribution and commitment to conservation in Nepal. 1. Who is eligible?
The Matthew Preece and Yeshi Lama Young Conservation Leader Award is awarded to individuals, men and women, who are less than 35 years of age (at the time of nomination) and who have contributed significantly in the field of biodiversity conservation in Nepal in the following areas:
1. Species conservation 2. Research 3. Advocacy and Campaign 4. Media 5. Innovation
2. How many nominations? Up to 2 (two) nominees may be submitted by each organization or individual to the WWF Nepal office for this award. Each nomination form must include the names of two individuals, as references. These references must not be related to the nominees.
3. Selection Panel Upon receipt of all nominations, the final recipients of the Young Conservation Leader Award will be selected by an impartial, independent Selection Panel.
4. Award Each recipient of the Award will be provided with a citation and a cash prize.
