Neal 10 Document Path: l:\council\bills\ggs\22670htc04.doc 11 12 Introduced in the House on May 6, 2004 13 Adopted by the House on May 6, 2004 14 15 Summary: Jimmie McDuffie 16 17 18 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 19 20 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 21 5/6/2004 House Introduced and adopted HJ-111 22 23 24 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 25 26 5/6/2004 27 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO EXPRESS THE SYMPATHY OF THE HOUSE OF 12 REPRESENTATIVES TO THE FAMILY AND MANY 13 FRIENDS OF THE LATE JIMMIE MCDUFFIE OF SUMTER. 14 15 Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were 16 deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jimmie McDuffie, of 17 Sumter, at the age of ninety-two; and 18 19 Whereas, Mr. McDuffie was a kind and generous man whose love 20 of the community was experienced by every citizen of Sumter; and 21 22 Whereas, delivering Christmas presents to children in rural areas, 23 making donations to local charities, civic organizations, and other 24 causes were just some of the ways Mr. McDuffie served his 25 community and the State of South Carolina; and 26 27 Whereas, constantly giving of himself, Mr. McDuffie was the 28 founder of McDuffie Furniture, was known to make anonymous 29 donations of furniture to City Hall, and was known locally for his 30 philanthropy; and 31 32 Whereas, while he made great efforts to keep his donations a 33 secret, Mr. McDuffie was honored in 1993 when then-Mayor 34 Steve Creech honored him for donating more than $450,000 to the 35 city for the construction of the West Liberty Street overpass at 36 Swan Lake; and 37 38 Whereas, Mayor Creech declared the overpass to be named 39 “McDuffie Crosswalk”, forever honoring Mr. McDuffie and his 40 charitable contributions; and 41

1 [5214] 1 1 Whereas, because of the new overpass, the community was able to 2 build play, parking, and picnic areas and a visitor’s center on the 3 northern side of the lake, which was previously difficult to access; 4 and 5 6 Whereas, through his desire to facilitate an easier route to the 7 northern side of the lake, Mr. McDuffie was able to help the city 8 create a place for parents and children to spend time together and 9 enjoy the beauty and serenity of Swan Lake; and 10 11 Whereas, a member of the Sumter City-County Planning 12 Commission and the Salvation Army Board, Mr. McDuffie was 13 also a past president of the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce, 14 a member of the Sumter Merchants Association, the South 15 Carolina Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the Sumter 16 Red Cross, and the Friends of Swan Lake Garden; and 17 18 Whereas, Mr. McDuffie is survived by his wife, Tillie McDuffie of 19 Sumter, a son, Angus McDuffie of Sumter, and a daughter, Mollie 20 McDuffie Lunsford; and 21 22 Whereas, Jimmie McDuffie was a generous man with a big heart 23 and his commitment and dedication to bettering other people’s 24 lives in Sumter will be sorely missed, but his philanthropic spirit 25 will always be remembered. Now, therefore, 26 27 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 28 29 That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of 30 South Carolina, by this resolution, express their sympathy to the 31 family and many friends of the late Jimmie McDuffie of Sumter. 32 33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 34 Mrs. Tillie McDuffie of Sumter. 35 ----XX---- 36
