POSITION SUMMARY:

The Program Coordinator – Strategic Planning in Washington, DC works as an integral member of AWF’s Program team, reporting to the CEO. The individual will provide strategic and technical support to the CEO and AWF’s Heartland Program as well as strengthen planning and monitoring tools and systems. Represent the Heartland Program in the wider conservation community, and manage key external and internal relationships that positively impact the work of AWF’s Heartland Program. Work as President’s Program representative in Washington to ensure that adequate financial, human resources, technical, and implementation capacity exists in Heartlands to achieve Program objectives.

Occasional trips to the field will be required, typically 2-4 weeks per year.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Development of strategic tools

 Consolidate and refine Heartland Strategic Plans, ensuring linkage to overall Heartland Program Strategy.  Refine and adapt AWF’s strategic planning and monitoring tools (HCP and PIMA) ensuring AWF’s Heartland Program follows an adaptive management framework consistent with best practices in the wider conservation community.  Formulate strategic discussion on potential Heartland Program expansion, gathering information and internal views within AWF; capture lessons learned in past expansion efforts (Southern Africa and DRC) to raise potential red flags and contribute towards prioritization efforts. Develop and coordinate Washington, DC Program relationships with technical and donor partners in support of the Heartlands Program.  Provide strategic support on proposal design and development and engage in technical areas of the program on as-needed basis.

2. Program Coordination & Fundraising  Serve as focal point in the US for AWF’s partnerships with key conservation partners; coordinate annual workplanning/ budgeting and negotiation; monitor implementation status; coordinate program collaboration and technical exchange between the two organizations. Provide Program support to CEO on select assignments.  Cultivate and strengthen technical US-based partnerships, and ensure AWF’s Program stays current and represented within the wider conservation community. Provide linkage between internal AWF departments to strengthen systems focused on improved integration of financial capacity and program implementation.  Direct primary cross-site grants which represent key pieces of our program funding for site-based work in Heartlands along with significant contribution to cross-site technical and programmatic services.  Ensure high-level technical reporting and annual workplanning along with implementation/financial tracking; Work closely with Program Design and Development departments to design and manage future cross-site grants for the Heartland Program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Bachelor’s in Business Administration or related field  One year of experience designing strategic plans and fund-raising for large conservation organization in Africa.
