This form is for the purpose of recording information concerning THESIS AND DISSERTATION COMMITTEE MEMBERS for MA and PhD students in the Department of Linguistics. After consultation with the Graduate Advisor, the student should take the form to each faculty member for their signature, and then return it to the Graduate Advisor.

(a) For Master’s Students: The supervisory committee must have at least three members. The student is responsible for securing a research supervisor who will act as Chair of the committee and who must be a fulltime member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The research supervisor should consult with prospective committee members about the proposed coursework even before the thesis topic has been decided. In consultation with the Chair, the student should establish the committee as soon as possible after the thesis topic is known; the committee should include at least two other members who are faculty from the Department in which the degree is to be taken. Other committee members may be from other Departments and/or from outside the University, and must be approved by the Graduate Advisor or Department Head.

(b) For Doctoral Students: The supervisory committee must have at least three members. The student is responsible for securing the committee Chair, who is usually the supervisor of thesis research and who must be a full-time member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Subject to the approval of the Chair, the student is responsible for indentifying at least two additional members. The membership may include: (i) full-time faculty from the Department in which the degree is taken; (ii) full-time faculty from other Departments; (iii) individuals who are not full-time adjunct faculty; (iv) qualified persons from outside the University. (iii) and (iv) require the approval of the Dean of Graduate Studies.
