The government has resolved to re-introduce coins.

The Council of Ministers in its regular sitting this afternoon, agreed that the currency be reintroduced in July.

This was after the Council listened to a report by the Central Bank Governor that indicated that coins would normalize market prices and make it easier for people to afford commodities.

The report also indicated that coins are easier to maintain compared to paper money.

Cabinet Affairs Minister Elia Lomuro spoke to journalists after the meeting.

Clip…………………………………Elia 1 “The council discussed thoroughly on the development, design and logo that these coins carry and that is the 50, 20 and 10 coins. The logo for Greater Equatoria is right and Greater Barh el Ghazal as well. However the logo for greater Upper Nile is to be revisited because what they did is put in the oil pipeline for oil exploration and that does not reflect the traditional symbols that represent Greater Upper Nile. The currencies used to suffer – especially the 5 pound note used to suffer from tornage [wear and tear], especially in the villages. “

The Council in its sitting has also confirmed renewed fighting between government and opposition forces in Unity State.

The fighting started this morning in the Panakuach area and was still continuing by this afternoon.

Regional leaders are expected to meet with opposition leader Riek Machar as a step towards realizing the full implementation of the Arusha intra-party agreement.

The proposed meeting follows this week’s visit to Juba by a group of 5 former political detainees that saw a recommitment to the agreement.

The Arusha peace agreement that was signed in January, covers party related issues, while the Addis Ababa peace process is focused on governance and security arrangements.

Speaking on Radio Miraya earlier today, acting SPLM party Secretary General, Anne Itto says implementation of the Arusha accord can still go ahead without the presence of the opposition.

Clip…………………….Itto agreement 2 “I believe the former detainees and the SPLM in government can actually begin the reforms in the security sector, call workshops and experts to look at our economy, issues of corruption and tribalism it is not going to wait until they come but fortunately our friends CCM the ruling party in Tanzania, the Africa National Congress in South Africa, EPDRF in Ethiopia and also NRM in Uganda all have agreed to bring Dr Riek to a meeting because it makes it easier for people to talk in Addis if they have agreed on some very basic principles.”

The acting Secretary General also said the party leadership in Juba is willing to make concessions in the interest of peace.
