 Low/No-Cost Training/Certification/Educational Opportunities

o The next Western Massachusetts OSHA Alliance (WMOSHA) Safety Meeting is this Friday, March 21st, 8 am – 11 am. The topic of discussion will be the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Safety Hoisting License Requirements. The meeting will be held in Amherst. See attached information to pre-register.

o The CT Business & Industry Assoc. (CBIA) is offering an OSHA 10-Hour General Industry class on Wednesday and Thursday, March 26 and 27 in Hartford. See attached information.

o American Ladders & Scaffolds, Inc. in Glastonbury is offering an all day, 9 am – 4 pm “Competent Person Training” for Scaffold users on Thursday, April 3, 2014. See attached information.

o CONN-OSHA has scheduled a no-cost Construction Site Safety training class for Friday, April 4, 2014 from 9 am – 12 noon. Pre-registration is required, send an e-mail to [email protected]. o CONN-OSHA has scheduled a no-cost Work Zone safety training class for Wednesday, April 9, 2014 from 10 am – 12 noon. Pre-registration is required, send an e-mail to [email protected].

o CONN-OSHA has scheduled a no-cost Trenching & Excavation safety training class for Wednesday, May 21, 2014 from 10 am – 12 noon. Pre-registration is required, send an e-mail to [email protected].

o SAVE THE DATE! OSHA Summer Summit, Thursday, June 26, 2014 at UMASS Amherst. Sponsored by UMASS Amherst, OSHA, The OSHA Training Institute Education Center/Keene State College, the CT Valley Chapter ASSE, and the Western Mass. Section ASSE. See attached Save the Date information.

 Ongoing Educational Opportunities

o The subject of the April 17, 2014 Breakfast Roundtable Discussion Group Meeting will be “Respirators.” Leona May, Compliance Assistance Specialist, U.S. Dept. of Labor – OSHA, Bridgeport Area Office, and Sue Roy, Safeware, Inc. will be the presenters. Respiratory protection must be worn whenever you are working in a hazardous atmosphere. The appropriate respirator will depend on the contaminant(s) to which you are exposed and the protection factor (PF) required. Required respirators must be NIOSH-approved and medical evaluation and training must be provided before use.

o The OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Keene State College has a number of 10- and 30- Hour Authorized Outreach Train-the-Trainer courses scheduled in New England through June 2014. See attached information.

o The OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Keene State College now has classes in Hamden CT! See attached for more information on the August 12-14, 2014 #3095 Electrical Standards Class and the May 2014 #502 Update for Construction Trainers, and #503 Update Class for General Industry Trainers classes.

o The University of Connecticut (UCONN) offers a bachelor’s degree program with a concentration in Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS), and it also offers a 5 course (15 credits) Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) post-baccalaureate certificate program. The OSH certificate program can be completed entirely online.  New Business/News

o Save the date(s)! The OSHA National Office, including the Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez, many Directorates, the OSHA Training Institute (OTI), the Salt Lake Technical Center, all ten OSHA Regional Offices and their Area Offices, OSHA State Plan states, OSHA State Consultation Offices, Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) participants, labor organizations, Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) facilities, Alliance partners, and local Building Inspectors will be working with as many stakeholders as possible on a nationwide scale to promote the National Preventing Falls in Construction Stand Down the week of June 2 – 6, 2014, part of the continuing Falls Campaign.

Employers and stakeholders will download materials including PowerPoint presentations from OSHA’s website using a dedicated webpage. Employers will schedule a convenient time for their safety officer/instructor to conduct the training at their worksites (remembering all shifts). After completing the training, they will return to the website to provide answers to four questions:

1. Employer name 2. State where it was conducted 3. Construction information (roofing, etc.) 4. Number of employees trained

After posting the data, employers will be able to print Certificates of Completion for their employees.

Stay tuned, the webpage will be activated on Worker Memorial Day, Monday, April 28th. See attached “Falls Save the Date Flyer”.

o The New England Area Chapters of American Society Safety Engineers (ASSE) Professional Development Conference (PDC) December 2 & 3, 2014, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Warwick, RI Call for Speakers & Presenters!

The New England Area ASSE Chapters invite those interested in presenting at the 2014 Area Professional Development Conference to submit an application for review by the Planning Committee. The objective is to give attendees the opportunity to:

. Build upon their professional skills and knowledge . Prepare for new challenges in the Safety, Health and Environmental fields . Provide practical solutions to the challenges in these fields The Planning Committee is looking for advanced, technically oriented and practical presentations that fulfill the needs of Safety, Health and Environmental Professionals. o Attention Safety Colleagues! Rebuild Hartford Annual Event. Saturday, April 26, 2014. Rebuild Hartford is celebrating 20 years of helping people maintain their homes! Volunteers are needed with Safety experience to provide direction to other Rebuild Hartford volunteers. Your focus as a Safety professional is to ensure the safety of the volunteers remains a priority. See attached for additional information.
