Job Description for Early Years Teaching Assistant

To work under the guidance of teaching/senior staff and with an agreed system of supervision, to implement agreed work programmes with individuals or groups. This will involve assisting the teacher in the whole planning cycle and the management /preparation of resources. Staff may also supervise whole classes occasionally.

Support for the pupils  To use specialist skills/training/knowledge/experience to support pupils.  Establish productive relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations, and interacting with them according to individual needs.  Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the classroom.  Encourage pupils to interact and work co-operatively with others and engage all pupils in activities.  Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement.  Provide support to pupils with transition to year 1.

Support for the teacher  Work with the teacher to establish an appropriate learning environment.  Work with the teacher in lesson planning, evaluating and adjusting lessons as appropriate.  Monitor and evaluate accurate pupils’ responses to learning activities through observation and planned recording of achievement.  Be responsible for keeping and updating records as agreed with the teacher.  Undertake marking of pupils work and accurately record achievement/progress.  Promote positive values, attitudes and good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflicts in line with school policies and to encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour.  Liaise sensitively and effectively with parents/carers as agreed with the teacher and participate in feedback sessions/meetings with parents.  Provide administrative support – photocopying/filing etc.

Support for the curriculum  Implement agreed learning activities, adjusting them according to pupil responses/needs.  Implement programmes linked to local and national strategies, feeding back to the teacher.  Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use.  Help pupils to access learning activities through specialist support.  Prepare, maintain and use resources required for the learning activity and assist pupils’ in their use.

Support for the school  Be aware and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, safeguarding,health and safety,confidentiality,data protection and security  Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have an equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.  Establish constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals, in liaison with the teacher, to support achievement and progress of pupils.  Contribute to the overall ethos of the school.  Attend and participate in meetings/INSET as required.  Participate in training and other learning activities and performance management as required.  Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips as required and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of the teacher.

Health and Safety

 Take responsibility for your own Health and Safety by following School procedures and guidelines.  Attend any necessary Health and Safety training which is required for you to perform your duties in a safe manner.  To carry out any necessary risk assessments for any activities/events/visits with the teacher.  Take responsibility for your own work life balance and well being,

Knowledge, skills and qualifications  Very good numeracy and literacy skills – G.C.S.E. C or above  NVQ 2/3 for Teaching Assistants or equivalent  Training in relevant learning strategies  First Aid training as appropriate  Effective use of ICT and other equipment  Full working knowledge of relevant policies, codes of practice and awareness of relevant legislation.  Working knowledge of EYFS and other relevant learning processes.  Work constructively as part of a team, understanding classroom roles and responsibilities  Ability to relate well to children and adults.  Understanding of principles of child development and learning processes  Ability to self evaluate learning needs and actively seek learning opportunities.
