The Perpetual Light is given this week In Loving Memory of Bertha & Frank Lasek and St. Hilda’s Room was full of activity this particular late Sunday afternoon. The Confirmation Natividad & Modesto Roman, the gift of David & Nelly Lasek. Class was in two groups, collaborating on a Bible Stories exercise. Each group had been given 16 sheets of paper; each sheet contained the title of a biblical story. A makeshift clothesline hung along two walls. The object of this particular exercise was to put the stories in order on the To have someone entered onto our Prayer List for 4 weeks, please e-mail the church office with clothesline, which made it into a timeline. the person’s name as well as the requester’s name. The e-mail address is: [email protected]. As the students worked together, they were comparing notes about each story – who remembered this one? Where in the Bible did it belong? The story was placed where they thought it belonged Last Sunday attendance: 162; Spanish Service: 9 on the line with a clothespin. When they got stuck, they referenced one of the many bibles in the room. It was very rare the students had to ask Deacon Anthony or myself for any assistance. When both groups were finished, the order was tweaked a little, and then we reviewed each of the stories. At the start of class, the idea of biblical interpretation was introduced by asking the teenagers to pretend they are living 1,000 years from now, and came across an artifact from 2014: a penny. Each student was given a penny, and they had to draw conclusions about our civilization today based solely on that object. The analogy was used to show how biblical scholars must sometimes do the same thing with a biblical text which had been found. In our first class the students flew paper airplanes containing inscriptions of what gifts and talents they have, and what they could share with the church. They joined in an exercise called Things in Common, and after a little while ten young people who hardly knew each other discovered they had more in common than they thought. This isn’t the Confirmation Class many of us experienced as youngsters. No memorization of the Catechism during the seven preparation classes. Deacon Anthony Jones and I are using as one of our resources a wonderful program developed by Jenifer Gamber: My Faith, My Life. Students will be learning about the Bible, Church History, what we as Episcopalians believe, worship, the sacraments, prayer, the broader church and will be reflecting on what God is calling them to do. Other resources used are activities I have used previously in team building. The activities we do each week are interactive, varied, and the students are encouraged to give feedback on how lessons are presented. Please keep in your prayers the wonderful students in St. John’s Huntington Confirmation Class of 2014: Jessica Cooley, Jack Glicker, Tim Low, Joseph Mangan, Gianna Masi, Annalise Mozer, Kenenna Onyebeke, Alexandra Purdy, James Tonjes, and Jack Vaccaro.
