The library is implementing a series of new directives to improve facilities offered to the community including a cyber safety talk for adults, teens and parents.
Mount Isa Mayor Tony McGrady said eSmart libraries was a free purpose-built system designed to equip libraries and connect library users with the skills they need for smart, safe and responsible use of technology.
“The online world is becoming a greater part of everyday life and libraries are the knowledge centres at the forefront of providing access and assistance to the community,” Cr McGrady said.
The Alannah and Madeline Foundation and the Telstra Foundation formed a partnership in 2012 to develop and implement eSmart libraries – one of Australia’s most significant community cyber safety initiatives. Backed by an investment of $8 million over six years, the partners will work closely with Australia’s 1500 libraries to connect local communities with the skills they need for smart, safe and responsible use of technology.
“As we progress along the way to us becoming an eSmart library, we will be holding a cyber safety talk for adults, teens and parents on Friday June 12, from 3pm, including guest speakers from Mount Isa Police and Telstra,” Cr McGrady said.
“We think community-based action such as eSmart libraries will truly drive e-safety as a cultural norm.” eSmart helps libraries provide environments where people can feel safe, become part of actual and virtual communities and acquire skills needed for the 21st century.
