PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY—CRISS TRAINING BEDFORD COUNTY SCHOOLS—FALL 2009—SPRING 2010 EDIS 589A: Reading Comprehension Strategies, Grades 2 – 12 – Help Your Students Understand What They Read! This course is an intensive training session devoted to practical strategies for reading, writing, discussion, studying, and vocabulary in all content areas. The emphasis will be on learning a range of content and comprehension strategies that lead to greater independence by student learners and more effective instruction by teachers. The course sessions will serve concurrently as a training session in Project CRISS: CReating Independence through Student-owned Strategies. Instructor: Ray Jones, Ph.D. Dr. Jones is currently an adjunct instructor for the University of Virginia, and formerly Assistant Professor and Director of Secondary Social Studies Education at Wake Forest University. Wayne Lyle, M.Ed. Mr. Lyle is a doctoral student at the University of Virginia, an adjunct instructor for U.Va., and employed as a principal with Bedford County Schools. Required Textbook: Project CRISS: CReating Independence through Student-owned Strategies. Santa, C., L. Havens and E. Maycumber. 3rd ed., Dubuque, IA: Kendall/Hunt. This text is only available to approved Project CRISS in-service trainers. The instructor will bring the CRISS manuals to the first class meeting—Cost is $50.00. FOUR TEACHER SECTIONS SCHEDULED FALL 2009 – SPRING 2010: Section 1 – Dates & times: (Saturday Classes), October 24, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and November 21, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Bedford Elementary School (Lyle) Section 2 – Dates & times: Friday, January 22, 12:00 noon – 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, January 23, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Bedford Elementary School (Jones) Section 3 – Dates & times: Friday, April 16, 12:00 noon – 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 17, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Bedford Elementary School (Jones) Section 4 – Dates & times: Friday, April 23, 12:00 noon – 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 24, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Bedford Elementary School (Lyle) ONE PARAPROFESSIONAL SECTION SCHEDULED SPRING 2010: Section 1P – Dates & times: Friday, March 26, 12:00 noon – 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 27, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Bedford Elementary School (TBA)

Tuition & credit: Special tuition rate for K-12 educators = $227.00. One semester-hour graduate credit. All Bedford County employees; tuition and books are paid for by BCPS.
