Career Academy Integrated Unit Plan

Academy Name: Academy of Drafting and Design School: Seabreeze High School

Integrated Unit Plan Title: Pyramids, cones, prisms, and cylinders Courses to integrate: Geometry, Drafting I Grade Level: 9-10 Timeline & Duration: Geometry – 3 days; Drafting – 3 days

Unit Summary: Geometry students will calculate the surface area and volume of various solids. The teacher will review and instruct the methods and formulas to use on the five given shapes (rectangular prism, truncated prism, pyramid, cone, rectangular base pyramid). The students will use their measuring skills to measure the figures accurately and perform the area and volume calculations found on the handout. In the drafting class, the students will use the sizes of the objects that they measured and develop stretch-outs for each of the various solids. They will cut the patterns out and glue them together to form the required shape.

Overview of Activities/Lessons per Course

Course Geometry Drafting I Activity/Lesson Find the surface area Develop patterns for objects using the object dimensions of the of prisms, cylinders, patterns used in the Geometry course pyramids Activity/Lesson Find the volume of prisms, cylinders, pyramids

Instructions to Teacher: Day 1 – Define pattern development; prepare simple patterns using parallel line development methods. Assign patterns to reinforce methods (prism, cylinder). Day 2 – Define the radial line development method. Assign patterns to reinforce development method (pyramid, cone). Day 3 – Have students print, cut out, and assemble assigned patterns to check volume and surface area. Have guest discuss job possibilities and relationships to what is happening in class.

Instructions to Students: Students are encouraged to interact throughout the lesson. Students will be allowed to use AutoCAD® for all drawings. The student will use the methods taught to draw selected assignments. They will then print and assemble the geometric objects to calculate the volume and surface area of each of the objects.
