Finding an Internship: Resources

It is the responsibility of the student to find an internship and to propose it to the Department Internship Coordinator. While Department Internship Coordinators are intended to be a resource for student interns, students should lead the effort to find a position. The following resources may help in the search for an acceptable internship.

A few items that students may consider when searching for an internship: • What does the student want to do after graduation? • Where does the student want to live after graduation? • Does the student have friends, relatives, etc in other cities around the country/world? • What is the student’s ultimate “dream job” after graduation? • Who does the student know? Who do those people know? • What are the application deadlines?

By doing some self-reflection and answering questions such as these, students may be able to better develop their internship goals.

Networking Networking is a process of using existing or newly developed acquaintances to help in the job search. Statistics show that: • Nearly 75% of all jobs are acquired through some type of networking. • 80-90% of the time, employers will hire people they already know. • 85-90% of all jobs are never formally advertised. A student’s network may consist of, but is not limited to: immediate family, relatives, friends, church members, bishoprics, university advisors, faculty, former employers, etc. Students can utilize their network by sending emails, making phone calls, making personal visits and so forth.

Career Navigator – A database designed to assist students in their search for companies and job/internship opportunities. Hundreds of companies list internship and job openings. Hub Service Missionaries – Part-time Missionaries located in 12 different cities, who are seeking ways to assist students in finding resources for internships, career opportunities, and housing. Expeditions – Internship expeditions are designed to assist in finding an internship or career. An expedition will provide students with an opportunity to network, contact, and meet with HR managers, alumni, hiring managers, and executives from companies in the expedition's respective area. Students will also be introduced to LDS resources such as members, wards,

BYU-Idaho Ambassadors – Friends of the University assigned to Stakes throughout the world. Their goal is to share the “Spirit of Ricks.” Once targeted companies have been identified, ambassadors in the area can be contacted to build relationships and to ask for referrals within those companies. BYU Management Society – A Society run by the Marriott School of Management at BYU. Career Workshops/Management Seminars – A compilation of activities designed to help students achieve their career goals. Career Preparation/Mentoring Services – Assists students and alumni in marketing themselves to potential employers. Networking – Networking is not just for finding a job! Students should use the techniques from the previous section to help with your search for housing. Idaho Work Study – Idaho Work Study is an employment program sponsored by the State of Idaho designed to encourage Idaho employers to hire Idaho resident students in jobs related to their course of academic study.
