The film – which tells the story of a teenage hockey phenom who goes from obscurity to overnight fame – also stars a slew of Canadian talent. Among those are singer/songwriter Marc Jordan (whose composing credits include Rod Stewart’s “Rhythm of My Heart” and Cher’s “Taxi Taxi”), newcomers Noah Reid and Allie MacDonald, along with cameos by music artists Nelly Furtado, Dave Bidini, Hawksley Workman and John McDermott, journalists George Stroumboulopoulos and Evan Solomon, sports anchor Steve Kouleas, hockey dad Walter Gretzky and hockey star Theo Fleury. Unlike other musicals, the story doesn’t stop just for the sake of a song. Instead, the lyrics (written by McGowan) drive the plot. There are 20 original songs, among them one called “Darryl vs. the Kid” by Barenaked Ladies, as well as “Hugs” by Olivia Newton-John, Amy Sky and Marc Jordan, and five songs on which Hawksley Workman contributed.

  • 2012 Hockey Conference Program
Putting it on Ice III: Constructing the Hockey Family Abstracts Carly Adams & Hart Cantelon University of Lethbridge Sustaining Community through High Performance Women’s Hockey in Warner, Alberta Canada is becoming increasingly urbanized with small rural communities subject to amalgamation or threatened by decline. Statistics Canada data indicate that by 1931, for the first time in Canadian history, more citizens (54%) lived in urban centre than rural communities. By 2006, this percentage had reached 80%. This demographic shift has serious ramifications for small rural communities struggling to survive. For Warner, a Southern Alberta agricultural- based community of approximately 380 persons, a unique strategy was adopted to imagine a sense of community and to allow its residents the choice to remain ‘in place’ (Epp and Whitson, 2006). Located 65 km south of Lethbridge, the rural village was threatened with the potential closure of the consolidated Kindergarten to Grade 12 school (ages 5-17). In an attempt to save the school and by extension the town, the Warner School and the Horizon School Division devised and implemented the Warner Hockey School program to attract new students to the school and the community. By 2003, the Warner vision of an imagined community (Anderson, 1983) came to include images of high performance female hockey, with its players as visible celebrities at the rink, school, and on main street. The purpose of this paper is to explore the social conditions in rural Alberta that led to and influenced the community of Warner to take action to ensure the survival of their local school and town.

  • Walter Gretzky – Lord Mayor of Brantford Tribute Bust the Project
Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant – Public Art Project Proposal Walter Gretzky – Lord Mayor of Brantford Tribute Bust Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant is a public regional art gallery in Brantford, Ontario that provides the region with six annual art exhibitions, over 40 events per year, a variety of art classes, workshops and camps for both adults and children, and a Permanent Collection with over 600 artworks. Glenhyrst is dedicated to engaging our local and regional communities with art and culture. As such, we propose a public art project that combines Brantford’s love of hockey while honouring our recently passed local hero, Walter Gretzky. Our focus on providing the community with public art in recent years fulfills our mandate to reframe the way that art and culture is accessed and encountered throughout the city, further expanding our responsibility as a public art gallery. The Project Glenhyrst was approached last year by the City of Brantford to facilitate the Call to Artists for the Walter Gretzky Portrait for the newly named Walter Gretzky Municipal Golf Course (previously the Northridge Municipal Golf Course). During that facilitation process, we took notice of one of the entries: a local sculptor named Robert Dey, who submitted a clay cast (to be bronzed) of Walter Gretzky as his submission. The submission was not chosen by the Jurors for the Portrait Call for Artists, but after the passing of Mr. Gretzky, we feel that creating a bust is a tremendous opportunity to honour him as Brantford’s only Lord Mayor. We have approached the artist and he is excited about the prospect of honouring Mr.

  • Wayne Gretzky
SPORTING LEGENDS: WAYNE GRETZKY SPORT: ICE HOCKEY COMPETITIVE ERA: 1978 - 1999 Wayne Douglas Gretzky, OC (born January 26, 1961) is a former professional ice hockey player and current head coach and part owner of the Phoenix Coyotes. Born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, he is known as The Great One, and considered by many to be the greatest player of all time. Taught by his father Walter, Gretzky was seen as a classic prodigy. At age 6 he was skating with 10-year-olds. At 10 he scored 378 goals and 120 assists in 85 games, and the first story on him was published in the Toronto Telegram. At 14, playing against 20- year-olds, he left Brantford to further his career. He also signed with his first agent. He played one year in the Ontario Hockey League, at the age of 16, with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. There he began wearing the number 99 on his jersey. He had wanted 9 - for his hero Gordie Howe - but it was already being worn by another teammate. At Coach Muzz MacPherson's suggestion Gretzky settled on 99. The next year (1978-79) he signed with the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association (WHA) as an underaged player. The NHL did not allow the signing of players under the age of 18 (nor does now), but the WHA had no rules regarding such signings. Nelson Skalbania, the owner of Indianapolis Racers, signed the 17 year old future superstar, Wayne Gretzky to, at that time, a whopping personal contract worth between $1.125 and 1.75 million US over 4 to 7 years.

Historica Canada Education Portal Leadership and Moving Mountains Overview This lesson plan is based on viewing the Footprint videos for Teeder Kennedy, Wayne Gretzky, Maurice Richard, Marilyn Bell, Terry Fox, and Larry Walker. Whether carrying a puck over the ice, slicing through water, crossing continents or excelling at America’s pastime (baseball), these athletes are leaders in their respective sports. But what makes them icons of leadership is just as much a matter of what they did beyond the sports arena to change the way we look at ourselves as Canadians. Aims To increase student awareness of Canadian athletes as leaders and agents of change; to learn how they have demonstrated their leadership on the national and international arenas; to understand the challenges each of these Canadians faced in pursing their goals; to analyse how the Canadian public accepts or rejects the inevitable flaws of its athletic ambassadors; and, to question accepted notions that associate certain physical character traits with leadership potential. Background The roots of athletic leadership may exist before birth, but it could be argued that circumstances, rather than innate ability, determine leadership potential. Teeder Kennedy's father was killed in a hunting accident one month before his son was born, initiating a series of events that would lead Teeder Kennedy to worship the blue and white jersey of the Toronto Maple Leafs throughout his life. As Kennedy's career evolved, Toronto's fans would return this affection. Maurice Richard emerged from the tough streets of French-Canadian Montreal to hoist the hopes and dreams of the Québécois nation on his shoulders.

Ferrall 1911–1995 A CKNOWLE D GEMENTS ost athletes, however gifted or average, have at least one coach that made a significant difference in their Mlives and added many memories. My personal memory, among many, is of the half-time pep talks of my foot- ball coach. Coach Junius B. Ferrall’s admonitions ran something like this: “Play your best, for you will replay these games in your minds the rest of your lives.” Sure, Coach, you bet! Now in my seventies, I am startled from time to time because I still replay those 1940s games in my mind. I say to myself, “If I had only. .” Coach Ferrall made a difference in my life and in the lives of countless others. Athletes of Purpose gave me great joy in its writing. Much of the credit for that joy goes to the children’s department of the Wooster Public Library. The staff helped me time and again with my search for background material. Denise Cheyney, my daughter-in-law, was very helpful with her knowledge of the Internet, as was my wife, Jeanne, who once again spent much time proofing the many drafts of the manuscript. Any shortcomings here- in are attributable to the author. Photo Credits Unless otherwise acknowledged, all photos are the property of Scott, Foresman and Company.
