Term Project Global Climate Change

Term Project – Global Climate Change

Subject: Global climate change. Your topic will cover any aspect of the ocean (e.g., ocean acidification and molluscs, sea level rise, impact on ecosystems, species distribution, ocean circulation, water temperatures, hurricanes, etc.) that is known to be affected by climate change.

Time Requirement: 7 minute presentation

Points: 200 Deadline: Due 1/18/16 – Submitted to Google Classroom

Format: Use the Oral Presentation rubric.

Final Product Submission: 1) PowerPoint file 2) hard copy of PowerPoint (6 slides per page).

The presentation will need to include an introduction (GCC and your topic) and a summary that reviews the main ideas and data.

File format – First 3 letters of each last name_gcc.pptx (e.g., AgbHaa_gcc.pptx)

Research As soon as you have your research initiated, write down the topic and source on the sign up clipboard. You may want to have a backup source in case the first one does not work out.

The project needs to be done on recent (from 2010 on) scientific research. Do not use information from a newspaper, newsletter, summary article, personal website, etc. Your article/paper must have methods and data to discuss, including numbers, tables, figures, etc.

There is a minimum of 5 sources, in addition to your textbook. These need to be cited when used and in the Literature Cited slide at the end of the presentation.

Extra credit will be given for peer-reviewed papers used in your project (up to three papers). You will need to cite these in the PowerPoint to get extra credit and upload a PDF copy to me.

In addition, if you interview a scientist who does research on your topic, you will get 10 extra credit points.

Scientist Interview Email the scientist. Let him/her know that you are a high school student working on an oral presentation. Use proper format in your email/letter (Dear “name, please/thank, Sincerely, your name). Scientists generally are very helpful and will be thrilled about what you are doing. Then set up a time to interview him/her over the phone or via email. Come up with some insightful questions that show you have read about their research and done some background research on the subject. Don’t just pump them for info!

Page 1 of 3 Term Project – Global Climate Change After you arrange your interview, ask if the author has any images you can use. They will usually email you those as well, which really help a presentation. Make sure you send a thank you email.

Quite often, the author is out at sea or out of town. If you do not hear back within several days, move on to another scientist. You can also try calling the author.

Where to start

1. Use these sites to find topics and authors. Then try Googling the authors to find more information. These do not count as a peer reviewed journal! These are sites to start from and then do more research. First: http://sciencedaily.com Second: http://www.whoi.edu/oceanus/index.do Third: http://discovermagazine.com/

2. Google Scholar. This is great for typing in key words and seeing what comes up. It will help you find an author (scientist) and/or the actual paper. After the results come up, sort by year using the anytime dropdown menu at the top of the page. Many papers are available as PDFs through this site.

Scientific Journals Examples of Scientific journal sources for these are Nature, Science, and Marine Biology. There are many more.

If you find an article that looks interesting, but can’t download it from the journal’s site, try searching for the article through Google and include “PDF” or “download” in your search terms.
