Riders may attempt the highest fence for their class. If they clear that successfully they proceed to the next fence. If they stop, then they must attempt a lower height. Only three attempts at the same obstacle are permitted, eg A,B, C / A, C,C / B,C,C, / C,C,C. Points are awarded for the fence successfully jumped. ‘A’ = 15 points, ‘B’ = 10 points and ‘C’ = 5 points. Should the rider refuse at an A jump and then instead of jumping the B jump, the rider has another attempt at the A jump then they are eliminated i.e. they must not present themselves at the same jump twice, with the exception of a C fence. No points will be awarded for jumping the incorrect fence for the class entered. A fall will result in a deduction of 30 points. Should they fail to negotiate a fence they will score no points but may continue to the next fence. Riders must give way to horses that catch up with them on the course but may proceed at a safe distance. There will be an optimum time for each class.

Buccleuch Hunt Pony Club Pick-A-Fence Rules

The rules of the competition are thus:-

Blue fences = A = 15 points Green fences = B = 10 points Yellow Fences = C = 5 points

The rider can jump the fences allocated to their class only. Classes 1, 2 & 6 are only allocated the B & C height fences whilst classes 3,5 & 7 can jump any of the three. The pairs classes are over B & C fences only.

Jumping an A fence when your class isn’t allocated A fences will result in no points at that fence. Should a rider refuse at an A fence then they must then try a B fence. Should they refuse the B fence then they must try the C fence, i.e. only one attempt at each height. The exception to this is those classes 1, 2 & 6 and the Pairs, where the riders are only permitted to jump B & C fences. In these classes, the riders can attempt the C fence twice. After three refusals they must move on to next fence.

Should a rider attempt the same height of fence twice they will be eliminated – except for the circumstance mentioned above.

Should a horse and rider not jump an obstacle after three attempts they must move on to the next fence.

A fall must be noted as this will cost the rider 30 penalty points.

If the rider falls after the horse and rider had got over the obstacle, then they remount and proceed to the next fence although they will incur 30 penalty faults. Should the fall happen without the horse and rider getting over the jump then they must remount and attempt the next lower jump.

Jump Judges can assist the rider to mount the horse should it be required

In the combination fences, the rider must do the same element the whole way through i.e. jumping the Blue (A) options at three elements would be worth 15 marks. However jumping the Blue (A) fence at the first two elements and then the Green (B) at the final element would score only 10 points.

Should the rider have a refusal at the second or third part of a combination then they can jump the remaining elements at the next lower height – the elements they have already jumped do not have to be repeated unless they want to. The mark awarded will be the value of the lowest fence cleared.

The Jump Judges will have flags to stop riders on the course should there be an incident ahead which prevents them from continuing. As there will be walkie talkies available, these judges upon being notified should stop the horse and rider. Once the horse has started to slow down the stop watch should be started to take account of how long the rider has been delayed. The rider will be asked to stop hopefully at about 50 metres from the jump or from a specific point such as opposite a tree or gate post. This allows a good reference point for which to stop recording the time when the rider eventually gets the go ahead to continue. The time the rider was delayed must be written on the form.
