Classroom News October 24,2014

ELA: On Thursday, we finished reading Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. We will take the last Because of Winn Dixie quiz on Monday. On October 31, we will watch the movie Because of Winn Dixie. It is a PG movie. I have watched the movie and see no reason to be concerned. However, if you do not want your child to watch this movie, please send me an email. After we watch the movie, we will compare and contrast the book and the movie.

Writing: This week and next week in Writer’s Workshop we will continue to write personal narratives.

Book-It: On October 27th please have your child bring in the book s/he completed for the month of October, and a cereal box.

Math: This week we have learned how to use the area model (which is a rectangle) to multiply. We have learned three ways to multiply. The three methods are: the Place Value Section Method, the Expanded Notation Method and the Algebraic Notation Method. The students have notes on each model. We also learned the “shortcut method” which I call “old school” because this is the way I learned to multiply. The current curriculum assumes that your child already knows his/her multiplication facts. Also during our Computer Lab time, the students are working on their timed facts. Students who have completed their addition and subtraction timed facts are working on their multiplication facts. ** Please remember that ixl is always available for your child to work on. Science: During Science this week we have learned about erosion and have seen how erosion affects the land.

Please remember to check your child’s planner each night. Also, I never collect homework early, so everything should be in his/her Take Home Folder. Spelling Homework: – Monday – 3 times each – Tuesday – 2 workbook pages – Wednesday – spelling activity – Thursday – study – Friday – corrections five times each

November 26th – November 28th – Thanksgiving Recess We are collecting Box Tops and Campbell Soup labels this year. Please save them and give them to your child to hand in!
