SECTION 15150 - SANITARY AND VENT PIPING
PART 1 - GENERAL
0.1 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes sanitary drainage and vent piping inside building and to locations indicated.
B. Related Sections include the following: 1. Division 2 Section "Sewerage and Drainage" for sanitary sewerage. 2. Division 15 Section "Plumbing Specialties" for drainage and vent piping system specialties.
0.2 SYSTEM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Provide components and installation capable of producing piping systems with the following minimum working-pressure ratings, unless otherwise indicated: 1. Soil, Waste, and Vent Systems: 10-foot head of water Sanitary Sewer, Force-Main Piping: (50, 100, 150) psig.
0.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Test Results and Reports: Specified in "Field Quality Control" Article.
B. Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings for fabrication and installation of the Work. Include the following. 1. Underslab Piping: Minimum scale of 1/8"=1'-0" in plan. Dimension from center-line of building column, site station marker, or other acceptable monument indicating inverts at offsets in grade and at intervals of not more than 100 feet. Show location of each inlet and cleanout, including the invert and size of each crossing utility. 2. Piping Floor Layouts: Minimum scale of 1/8"=1'-0" in plan, except minimum scale of 1/4"=1'-0" for equipment room arrangements and site reinforced concrete structures in plan. 3. Details for Plan, Elevation, Section and Assembly: Minimum scale of 1/2"=1'-0" for critical areas, sheet metal gutter shielding of electrical equipment, trapeze hanger assemblies, special details, and sleeving through walls, floors, roof and structural members. 4. Sleeve or Core Drilled Hole Placement Locations: Minimum scale of 1/8"=1'-0" in plan and elevation. Dimension from center-line of building column or face of major structural elements.
C. Product Data: Submit material list with technical data documenting the primary function, quality, and performance of materials and equipment to be used in the Work, e.g., the pressure ranges, identifying types and numbers, or other such primary characteristics as required by the Drawings or Specifications. Furnish a listing for each of the following. 1. Hangers and support devices. 2. Piping, tubing, fittings and couplings, including documentation indicating approval of authorities having jurisdiction for the specific service intended.
D. Record Documents: Submit record documents annotated with the changes made during installation of the Work so as to be a complete record of "as installed" Work. Include the following. 1. Submitted shop drawings with required endorsements of authorities having jurisdiction. 2. Submitted tests, inspections, and certifications.

0.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Provide listing/approval stamp, label, or other marking on piping made to specified standards.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
0.1 PIPES AND TUBES
A. General: Applications of the following pipe and tube materials are indicated in Part 3 "Piping Applications" Article.
B. Hub-and-Spigot, Cast-Iron Soil Pipe: ASTM A 74, Service class. Include ASTM C 564 rubber gasket, with dimensions required for pipe class, for each hub.
C. Hubless, Cast-Iron Soil Pipe: ASTM A 888 or CISPI 301.
D. Hard Copper Tube: ASTM B 88, Types Lwater tube, drawn temper.
E. Hard Copper Tube: ASTM B 306, drainage tube, drawn temper.
F. Galvanized Steel Pipe: ASTM A 53, Type E or S, Grade A or B, Schedule 40.
G. Galvanized, Steel Pipe Nipples: ASTM A 733, made of ASTM A 53 or ASTM A 106, Schedule 40, seamless, steel pipe.
H. PVC Pipe: ASTM D 2665, Schedule 40. Do not use PVC Piping through fire walls.
0.2 PIPE AND TUBE FITTINGS
A. General: Applications of the following pipe and tube fitting materials are indicated in Part 3 "Piping Applications" Article.
B. Threaded-Fitting, End Connections: ASME B1.20.1.
C. Hub-and-Spigot, Cast-Iron, Soil-Pipe Fittings: ASTM A 74, Service class, hub and spigot. Include ASTM C 564 rubber gasket, with dimensions required for pipe class, for each hub.
D. Hubless, Cast-Iron, Soil-Pipe Fittings: CISPI 301.
E. Copper, Solder-Joint Drainage Fittings: ASME B16.23 cast copper or ASME B16.29 wrought copper.
F. Copper, Solder-Joint Pressure Fittings: ASME B16.18 cast-copper alloy or ASME B16.22 wrought copper. Furnish wrought-copper fittings if indicated.
G. Bronze Flanges: ASME B16.24, Class 150, bronze, with solder-joint end.
H. Copper Unions: ASME B16.18, cast-copper-alloy, hexagonal-stock body with ball-and-socket joint, metal-to-metal seating surfaces, and solder-joint, threaded, or solder-joint and threaded ends.
I. Malleable-Iron Unions: ASME B16.39, Class 150, hexagonal-stock body with ball-and-socket joint, metal-to-metal bronze seating surfaces, and female threaded ends with threads according to ASME B1.20.1.

J. Cast-Iron, Threaded Fittings: ASME B16.4, Class 125, galvanized, standard pattern.
K. Cast-Iron, Threaded Flanges: ASME B16.1, Class 125.
L. PVC Pipe: ASTM D 2665, Schedule 40, Do not use PVC Piping through fire walls.
M. PVC Socket Fittings: ASTM D 2665.
0.3 JOINING MATERIALS
A. General: Applications of the following piping joining materials are indicated in Part 3 "Piping Applications" Article.
B. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for commonly used joining materials.
C. Solder: ASTM B 32, Alloy Sn95, Sn94, or E; lead free.
D. Hubless, Cast-Iron, Soil-Piping Couplings: ASTM C 1277 assembly of metal housing, corrosion-resistant fasteners, and ASTM C 564 rubber sleeve or gasket with integral, center pipe stop. Include the following: 1. Heavy-Duty, Stainless-Steel Couplings: ASTM A 666, Type 304, stainless-steel housing or shield; and stainless-steel clamps. Include gasket. a. Clamp Width: 3 inches wide with 4 clamps, for piping 1-1/2- to 4-inch NPS 2. Clamp Width: 4 inches wide with 6 clamps, for piping 5- to 10-inch NPS Seal with “Black- Swan” adhesive-lube, or approved equal.
E. PVC: solvent cement. Comply with procedures in ASTM F 402 for safe handling during joining of plastic pipe.
0.4 VALVES
A. Refer to Division 15 Section "Valves" for general-duty valves. Use valves specified for "Domestic Water Systems" applications.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
0.1 EXCAVATION
A. Refer to Division 2 Section "Earthwork" for excavating, trenching, and backfilling.
0.2 PIPING APPLICATIONS
A. Transition and special fittings with pressure ratings at least equal to piping pressure rating may be used in applications below, unless otherwise indicated.
B. Flanges may be used on aboveground piping, unless otherwise indicated.
C. Aboveground, Soil, Waste, and Vent Piping: Use the following: 1. 1-1/2-Inch NPS: Hubless, cast-iron soil pipe; hubless, cast-iron, soil-pipe fittings PVC; and one of the following hubless, cast-iron, soil-piping couplings, PVC socket fittings: a. Couplings: Heavy-duty, Type 304, stainless steel. 2. 1-1/4- and 1-1/2-Inch NPS: Hard copper drainage tube; copper, solder-joint drainage fittings; and soldered joints.

3. 2-Inch and larger NPS: Hubless, cast-iron soil pipe; hubless, cast-iron, soil-pipe fittings PVC ; and one of the following hubless, cast-iron, soil-piping couplings, PVC socket fittings: a. Couplings: Heavy-duty, Type 304, stainless steel.
D. Underground, Soil, Waste, and Vent Piping: Use the following: 1. 2-Inch and larger NPS: PVC pipe and socket fittings with solvent cement joints.
E. Aboveground Sanitary-Sewage Force Mains: Use the following piping materials for each size range: 1. NPS 1-1/2 Hard copper tube, Type L copper pressure fittings; and soldered joints. 2. NPS 2 to NPS 4 Steel pipe; gray-iron, threaded fittings; and threaded joints.
F. Underground Sanitary-Sewage Force Mains: Use the following piping materials for each size range: 1. NPS 2 to NPS 4Use NPS 3 and NPS 4mechanical joint, ductile-iron pipe and fittings.
0.3 PIPING INSTALLATION, GENERAL
A. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for basic piping installation.
0.4 DRAINAGE AND VENT PIPING INSTALLATION
A. Install cast-iron soil piping according to CISPI's "Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings Handbook," Chapter IV, "Installation of Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings."
B. Make changes in direction for drainage and vent piping using appropriate branches, bends, and long-sweep bends. Sanitary tees and short-sweep 1/4 bends may be used on vertical stacks if change in direction of flow is from horizontal to vertical. Use long-turn, double Y-branch and 1/8-bend fittings if 2 fixtures are installed back to back or side by side with common drain pipe. Straight tees, elbows, and crosses may be used on vent lines. Do not make change in direction of flow greater than 90 degrees. Use proper size of standard increasers and reducers if different sizes of piping are connected. Reducing size of drainage piping in direction of flow is prohibited.
C. Lay buried building drain piping beginning at low point of each system. Install true to grades and alignment indicated, with unbroken continuity of invert. Place hub ends of piping upstream. Install required gaskets according to manufacturer's written instructions for use of lubricants, and other installation requirements. Maintain swab in piping and pull past each joint as completed.
D. Install cleanout fitting with closure plug inside the building in sanitary force-main piping.
E. Underground, Ductile-Iron, Force-Main Piping: Comply with AWWA C600. Install buried piping inside the building between wall and floor penetrations and connection to sanitary sewer piping outside the building with restrained joints. Anchor pipe to wall or floor. Install thrust-block supports at vertical and horizontal offsets. 1. Encase piping with PE film according to ASTM A 674 or AWWA C105.
F. Install cast-iron sleeve with water stop and mechanical sleeve seal at each service pipe penetration through foundation wall. Select number of interlocking rubber links required to make installation watertight. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for sleeves and mechanical sleeve seals.

G. Install wall penetration system at each service pipe penetration through foundation wall. Make installation watertight. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for wall penetration systems.
H. Install drainage and vent piping at the following minimum slopes, unless otherwise indicated: 1. Sanitary Building Drain: 2 percent downward in direction of flow for piping 3-inch NPS and smaller; 1 percent downward in direction of flow for piping 4-inch NPS and larger. 2. Horizontal, Sanitary Drainage Piping: 2 percent downward in direction of flow. 3. Vent Piping: 1 percent down toward vertical fixture vent or toward vent stack.
I. Backwater Valves: Install backwater valves in piping subject to sewage backflow. 1. Horizontal Piping: Horizontal backwater valves. Use normally closed type, unless otherwise indicated. 2. Floor Drains: Drain outlet backwater valves, unless drain has integral backwater valve. 3. Install backwater valves in accessible locations. 4. Refer to Division 15 Section "Plumbing Specialties" for backwater valves.
0.5 JOINT CONSTRUCTION
A. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for basic piping joint construction.
B. Cast-Iron, Soil-Piping Joints: Make joints according to CISPI's "Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings Handbook," Chapter IV, "Installation of Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings." 1. Compression Joints: Make with rubber or neoprene gasket matching class of pipe and fittings. 2. Hubless Joints: Make with rubber gasket and sleeve or clamp.
0.6 HANGER AND SUPPORT INSTALLATION
A. Refer to Division 15 Section "Hangers and Supports" for pipe hanger and support devices. Install the following: 1. Riser clamps, MSS Type 8 or Type 42, for vertical runs. 2. Adjustable steel clevis hangers, MSS Type 1 for horizontal runs.
B. Install supports according to Division 15 Section "Hangers and Supports."
C. Support vertical piping and tubing at base and at each floor.
D. Rod diameter may be reduced one size for double-rod hangers, with 3/8-inch minimum rods.
E. Hanger spacing is based on developed length measured along centerline of pipe.
F. Hanger spacing given is maximum allowed; reduce as required to be at or below maximum recommended loading of pipe support assembly according to manufacturer’s published data. Provide pipe hangers at reduced spacing where indicated on the drawings and as required not to overload the building structure.
G. Horizontal Plastic Pipe Supported by Hangers 1. Plastic pipe, DWV, maximum intervals of 4 feet and at end of branches and at change of direction or elevation and trap arms 3 feet or greater.
H. Horizontal Cast Iron No-Hub Pipe Supported by Hangers: Cast iron no-hub pipe at least at every other joint, except when developed length between hangers exceeds 4 feet they shall be provided at each joint. Provide hangers at each horizontal branch connection.

I. Other means of hanging must be approved by the Architect/Engineer. Do not use perforated band iron or wire as hangers.
J. Do not hang pipes from other pipes.
K. Install hangers for copper tubing with the following maximum spacing and minimum rod diameters: 1. 1-1/4-Inch NPS: Maximum horizontal spacing, 72 inches with 3/8-inch minimum rod diameter; maximum vertical spacing, 10 feet. 2. 1-1/2 and 2-Inch NPS: Maximum horizontal spacing, 96 inches with 3/8-inch minimum rod diameter; maximum vertical spacing, 10 feet. 3. 2-1/2-Inch NPS: Maximum horizontal spacing, 108 inches with 1/2-inch minimum rod diameter; maximum vertical spacing, 10 feet.
L. Install hangers for cast-iron soil piping with the following maximum spacing and minimum rod diameters: 1. 1-1/2- and 2-Inch NPS: Maximum horizontal spacing, 60 inches with 3/8-inch minimum rod diameter; maximum vertical spacing, 15 feet 2. 3-Inch NPS: Maximum horizontal spacing, 60 inches with 1/2-inch minimum rod diameter; maximum vertical spacing, 15 feet 3. 4- and 5-Inch NPS: Maximum horizontal spacing, 60 inches with 5/8-inch minimum rod diameter; maximum vertical spacing, 15 feet 4. 6-Inch NPS: Maximum horizontal spacing, 60 inches with 3/4-inch minimum rod diameter; maximum vertical spacing, 15 feet 5. 8- through 12-Inch NPS: Maximum horizontal spacing, 60 inches with 7/8-inch minimum rod diameter; maximum vertical spacing, 15 feet
M. Spacing for horizontal pipe in 10-foot lengths may be increased to 10 feet. Spacing for fittings is limited to 60 inches. Support piping and tubing not listed above according to MSS SP-69 and manufacturer's written instructions.
0.7 CONNECTIONS
A. Connect drainage piping to existing piping, and extend to and connect to the following: 1. Plumbing Fixtures: Connect drainage piping in sizes indicated, but not smaller than required by plumbing code. Refer to Division 15 Section "Plumbing Fixtures." 2. Plumbing Specialties: Connect drainage and vent piping in sizes indicated, but not smaller than required by plumbing code. Refer to Division 15 Section "Plumbing Specialties." 3. Equipment: Connect drainage piping as indicated. Provide shutoff valve, if indicated, and union for each connection. Use flanges instead of unions for connections 2-1/2-inch NPS and larger.
0.8 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Inspect drainage and vent piping as follows: 1. Do not enclose, cover, or put piping into operation until it is inspected and approved by authorities having jurisdiction. 2. During installation, notify authorities having jurisdiction at least 24 hours before inspection must be made. Perform tests specified below in presence of authorities having jurisdiction. a. Roughing-In Inspection: Arrange for inspection of piping before concealing or closing-in after roughing-in and before setting fixtures. b. Final Inspection: Arrange for final inspection by authorities having jurisdiction to observe tests specified below and to ensure compliance with requirements. 3. Reinspection: If authorities having jurisdiction find that piping will not pass test or inspection, make required corrections and arrange for reinspection.

4. Reports: Prepare inspection reports and have them signed by authorities having jurisdiction.
B. Test sanitary and vent piping according to procedures of authorities having jurisdiction or, in absence of published procedure, as follows: 1. Test for leaks and defects in new piping and parts of existing piping that have been altered, extended, or repaired. If testing is performed in segments, submit separate report for each test, complete with diagram of portion of piping tested. 2. Leave uncovered and unconcealed new, altered, extended, or replaced drainage and vent piping until it has been tested and approved. Expose work that has been covered or concealed before it has been tested and approved. 3. Roughing-In Plumbing Test Procedure: Test sanitary and vent piping on completion of roughing-in. Close openings in piping system and fill with water to point of overflow, but not less than 10 feet of head. Water level must not drop from 15 minutes before inspection starts through completion of inspection. Inspect joints for leaks. 4. Finished Plumbing Test Procedure: After plumbing fixtures have been set and traps filled with water, test connections and prove they are gas tight and watertight. Plug vent-stack openings on roof and building drains where they leave building. Introduce air into piping system equal to pressure of 1-inch wg. Use U-tube or manometer inserted in trap of water closet to measure this pressure. Air pressure must remain constant without introducing additional air throughout period of inspection. Inspect plumbing fixture connections for gas and water leaks. 5. Repair leaks and defects using new materials and retest piping or portion thereof until satisfactory results are obtained. 6. Prepare reports for tests and required corrective action.
0.9 CLEANING AND PROTECTING
A. Clean interior of piping system. Remove dirt and debris as work progresses.
B. Protect drains during remainder of construction period to avoid clogging with dirt and debris and to prevent damage from traffic and construction work.
C. Place plugs in ends of uncompleted piping at end of day and when work stops.
