DESCRIPTION (as per The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 9 and 10): This course enables students to broaden their understanding of relationships and extend their problem-solving and algebraic skills through investigation, the effective use of technology, and abstract reasoning. Students will explore quadratic relations and their applications; solve and apply linear systems; verify properties of geometric figures using analytic geometry; and investigating the trigonometry of right and acute triangles. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems.

OVERALL GOALS: By the end of this course, students will:  Model and solve problems involving the intersection of two straight lines;  Solve problems using analytic geometry involving problems of lines and line segments;  Verify Geometric Properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, using analytic geometry;  Determine the basic properties of quadratic relations;  Relate transformations of the graph y  x 2 to the algebraic representation y  a(x  h)2  k ;  Solve quadratic equations and interpret the solutions with respect to the corresponding relations;  Solve problems involving quadratic relations;  Use ratio and proportion to investigate similar triangles and solve problems related to similarity;  Solve problems involving right triangles, using the primary trigonometric ratios;  Solve problems involving acute triangles, using the sine law and cosine law.

Absences & Evaluations 1. If you know prior to the evaluation that you will be absent, make other arrangements with your teacher regarding that particular assessment. 2. If for some reason you are absent on the day of an evaluation: a. Call the Math Office before 8:45 am and speak with your teacher or leave a message for him/her. b. On the first day back, a note from your parent/guardian is required. Mathematics Department Victoria Park Collegiate Institute TEACHING, ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION STRATEGIES: Throughout this course, students will develop their understanding of essential mathematical knowledge and procedures. This knowledge becomes meaningful in reasoning, communicating, and solving problems based on real-life situations. Technology, calculators and/or computer software, will be used to compliment the teaching and application of mathematical skills and explore concepts where appropriate.

Student success is greatly enhanced by good attendance, behaviour, and class participation. Completion of daily homework exercises and writing all evaluations will provide feedback on student learning. For courses with multiple sections, summative evaluations will assess common expectations.

Quizzes and assignments will be scheduled throughout the course. A summative test will conclude a unit or a group of related units. Below is a list of anticipated evaluations. This list may be modified to accommodate circumstances that arise throughout the semester.
