INDUCTION COURSE Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Wheldon Building 11th, 13th and 14th January 2016

Objectives of the induction

By the end of the induction colleagues will have been introduced to:

1. Some important issues facing teachers in higher education in the UK today

2. The core elements and requirements of the programme

3. Some aspects of current pedagogical thinking and research relating to teaching and learning

4. Useful examples of practical teaching and learning techniques Preparation for the Induction

Day 1. A short learning statement entitled: ‘Reflect on your experience as a learner and/or teacher and discuss how this will influence your approach to teaching and supporting learning in your discipline’ (1-2 pages). This piece represents your thoughts and perceptions on teaching and learning in higher education, in particular, in your subject area. It is intended to be reflective and to provide a basis for discussion. In this way, it does not need to be heavily referenced. It will provide a baseline from which to develop professionally as a teacher and facilitator of learning. Please bring six A4 copies.

Day 3. During the Induction, each programme participant will give a 10 minute presentation to a small group on a topic relating to their teaching and learning. The presentation may be delivered in any way chosen by the participant. The purpose of this is to gain feedback on your style of teaching.

On the final day of the Induction you will also need to present a poster (A1 flipchart) demonstrating your proposal for the first Reflective and Evaluative Account of Teaching. It should contain:

• Description & evaluation of the present situation/problem and your reason for attempting to develop/resolve it.

• Your proposed teaching intervention underpinned with brief theoretical justification.

• Your proposed method of evaluating the intervention.
