PREPOSITIONS
A preposition is a word (or group of words) that shows the relationship between its object (a noun or pronoun that follows the preposition) and another word in the sentence.
Ex: The dog sat under the large tree.
(under shows the relationship between the verb, sat, and the object of the preposition, tree)
A prepositional phrase includes the preposition, the object of the preposition, and the modifiers of the object. A prepositional phrase may function as an adverb or an adjective.
Little girls run from spiders. (The phrase modifies the verb , run)
Little girls with inquisitive minds enjoy their company. (The phrase modifies the noun, girls)
Prepositions are also a useful way to vary your sentence beginnings.
Examples: After dinner we went to the store.
During the timeout I looked at the scoreboard.
