<p> PREPOSITIONS</p><p>A preposition is a word (or group of words) that shows the relationship between its object (a noun or pronoun that follows the preposition) and another word in the sentence. </p><p>Ex: The dog sat under the large tree. </p><p>(under shows the relationship between the verb, sat, and the object of the preposition, tree) </p><p>A prepositional phrase includes the preposition, the object of the preposition, and the modifiers of the object. A prepositional phrase may function as an adverb or an adjective.</p><p>Little girls run from spiders. (The phrase modifies the verb , run) </p><p>Little girls with inquisitive minds enjoy their company. (The phrase modifies the noun, girls)</p><p>Prepositions are also a useful way to vary your sentence beginnings.</p><p>Examples: After dinner we went to the store.</p><p>During the timeout I looked at the scoreboard.</p><p> about behind from onto underneath above below in out of until across beneath in front of outside up after beside inside over upon against between into past with along by near since within among down of through without around during off to at except on toward before for on top of under </p>
