Meeting Notes
Attendee list is maintained by SCPA Board Member Keith Nohe. For reference, attendee list is attached at the bottom of this document.
Keith Nohe introduced the 5 SCPA Board members; himself, Patrick Flynn, Erik Goldoff, Kelly Kelkenberg and Lori Weaver. Keith announced that Mel Curtis would be assuming a less active role in the organization and thanked Mel for his amazing contributions over many years.
Kelly Kelkenberg presented an overview of the SCPA Board of Directors composition and current status. Two of the five board members will be replaced in elections during the November meeting (November 12, 2009). Nominations will be accepted before and during the August 13, 2009 meeting. The current Board members rolling off this year are Kelly Kelkenberg and Lori Weaver. Since Kelly represents the public sector member, one of the new Board members elected in November must be from the public sector.
Patrick Flynn presented an overview of SCPA branding, social networking and launching a member survey. Members provided additional ideas. Current status and initiatives will be discussed with members during the August meeting.
Erik Goldoff discussed the history of the SCPA web site and the new web site being developed. A communication will go out to the SCPA membership as soon as the new web site is available for review and comments. Members provided additional ideas.
The members briefly discussed options for generating funds that could be used for web domain registration and other activities. Membership dues, web advertising and vendor fees were discussed as potential sources. Members agreed that identifying activities that require funds should be accomplished before discussing how funds would be collected. No decisions were made during the meeting.
Lori Weaver discussed the need for organizations to volunteer to host upcoming meetings of the SCPA as well as the need to identify speakers and topics for meeting discussion. SCPA members are asked to communicate to Lori ([email protected]) if they can volunteer to host or present at upcoming meetings.
Members were introduced to Kamille McCormick-Stroud from the Georgia Department of Health. Kamille extended an invitation to SCPA members to join an informational session she is conducting on June 5th at the Atlanta Offices of The American Red Cross. In that session, the Strategic National Stockpile (of anti-viral medications and personal protection devices) Closed POD (Point of Distribution) program will be discussed. A specific invitation to this meeting will be sent to all SCPA members.
The guest speaker, Jim Satterfield, was introduced. Jim is the president and COO of Firestorm. Jim spoke to the group with a presentation titled, “Luck is not a Strategic Plan”. Synopsis: America’s Disaster/Crisis environment is explosive. Firestorm has conducted benchmark analysis of hundreds of Business Continuity plans and Pandemic/Communicable Plans. Firestorm shared lessons learned, the five common failures in a disaster, critical insights into the Department of Homeland Security certification of private sector Business Continuity Plans, and opportunities to create a strategic advantage in a crisis. Meeting closed with an informal networking session.
