Homeschoolers at the Library

Homeschoolers at the Library Friday, April 14, 2017 @ 1 PM Rock On! Resource List

What We Did This Month  April’s program was all about rocks! We talked about what rocks are and what we know about rocks, and then read What Are Rocks Made Of? by Ellen Lawrence to give us some background information. We also read What Is the Rock Cycle? by Ellen Lawrence to learn how rocks are formed.  After learning a little about rocks, we got out several rock kits and explored different rocks! The students had ample time to look at and read about rocks, compare, inspect, and pick out their favorites.  We then tested the rocks using an experiment from Experiments with Rocks and Minerals by Salvatore Tocci. This helped us see how some rocks are really hard and others are not.  We finished out with a rock scavenger hunt in nonfiction to help us find books about rocks, minerals, famous rocks, and more. The students then had the opportuniny to create a pet rock to take home.
