Meeting of the UMES Senate Minutes for March 10, 2015

I. CALL TO ORDER
The Senate meeting was called to order at 11:04am by Dr. Lombuso S. Khoza.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The approval of November 11 Senate minutes was moved by Dr. Maryam Rahimi and seconded by Dr. Jacqueline Brice-Finch. The motion carried.
III. OLD BUSINESS
Academic Affairs Committee:
Dr. Latasha Wade, Chair of the Senate Academic Affairs Committee (SAAC), gave an update on the work of the committee; please refer to the PPT presentation on the Senate Page for more information re: each of the programs below.
Department of English and Modern Languages:
ENGL 488 (change course title) ENGL 490 (change to a required course for English majors) ENGL 388E (change course title) CHIN 102 (option for Discipline C (language) under Curriculum Area I Arts and Humanities) 1 Motion to approve changes by Ms. Michel Demanche. Seconded by Dr. Mark Williams. The motion carried.
Rehabilitation Services :
RECN 640 (change to course title and course description) RECN 641 (change to course title) RECN 642 (change to course title and course description) RECN 715 (change to course title) Motion to approve changes by Dr. Rahimi. Seconded by Dr. Brice-Finch. The motion carried.
Pharmacy :
RECN 642 (change course title and course description) RECN 715 (change course title) PHAR 571/572 (increase credit, modify structure and course description) PHAR 671/672 (modify structure and focus of course) Motion to approve changes by Dr. Rahimi. Seconded by Dr. Brice-Finch. The motion carried.
Education :
Increase the number of credit hours required for the M.Ed. in Counselor Education from 48 to 60 (both specializations) Change the name of the Community Counseling specialization to Clinical Mental Health Counseling Modify the program curriculum such that all courses are required (no electives) o Department seeking ACREP ac Title, associated catalog description, and credit hour changes o CNED 697 (change title and number of credits) o CNED 699 (change title and number of credits) o New courses (all 3 credit courses) . CNED 636, CNED 637, CNED 671,CNED 672, CNED 675 Motion to approve changes by Ms. Demanche. Seconded by Dr. Rahimi. The motion carried.
Human Ecology :
Add to Fashion Merchandising minor o FMCT 203, FMCT 351, FMCT 371 Change prerequisite from Math 109 to Math 102 or higher o FMCT 341, FMCT 382 Remove Math prerequisite o FMCT 351 Motion to approve changes by Ms. Demanche. Seconded by Dr. Brice-Finch. The motion carried.
2 Architectural Engineering Technology :
Establish a new concentration as part of the B.S. in Engineering Technology – Architectural Engineering Technology Establish a new prefix for courses associated with AET concentration (ETAE) New courses (all 3 credit courses) o EDTE 109, ETAE 251, ETAE 253, ETAE 362, ETAE 366, ETAE 466: Motion to approve changes by Ms. Etahe Johnson. Seconded by Dr. Brice-Finch. The motion carried.
Mechanical Engineering Technology :
Update catalog description for program to reflect actual degree awarded Revise course descriptions . ETME 303, ETME 395, ETME 499 Add two courses to MET concentration (1-6 credit hours) . ETME 299, ETME 399
Motion to approve changes by Dr. Kenny Fatouhi. Seconded by Ms. E. Johnson. The motion carried.
Renewable Energy Systems Engineering :
Establish a new graduate program – M.S. in Renewable Energy Systems Engineering o Traditional instruction delivery format Program overview o 30 credit hour, thesis option o 33 credit hour, non-thesis option Faculty needs . Seven current full-time faculty qualified to teach in program . Requesting 5 additional faculty to supplement teaching (2 FT, 3 PT) Space needs . Adequate facilities available on campus (engineering building) Funding requested to cover faculty salary/fringe, instrumentation and equipment for 4 new labs, and ancillary expenses Institutions with similar courses of study . No other institutions in the USM offer degree programs in renewable energy systems engineering . Closest similar program offered by Penn State (B.S. in Energy Engineering) . Proposal modifications recommended and requested by SAAC
– Update the MHEC Academic Program Proposal cover sheet
– Consider adding topics related to the social, economic, and environmental impact of renewable energy to a course, select courses, or create a new course that addresses this area 3 – Update course prefixes and numbers for ENGE 607-610
– Make few changes to narrative
Motion to approve changes by Dr. Alvernon Walker. Seconded by Dr. Rahimi. Motion carried.
Dr. Wade reminded that the final review window was March 10th – April 3rd. Dr. Brice-Finch thanked Dr. Wade for her work leading the committee.
Retention Issues:
Ms. Stephanie Hallowell, co-chair of the Retention Committee, presented some potential retention ideas to help increase our retention rates. Dr. Donna Satterlee is the Chair. Some of the ideas presented were clubs for majors, content tutoring, online courses. Dr. Walker suggested that we review retention practices at other campuses. Hugo Aldana, student in Aviation Sciences, spoke to the retention issue.
IV. NEW BUSINESS
125 th Anniversary – 2 nd Morrill Act:
Dr. Malinda Cecil encouraged everyone to visit the SANS page (http://www.umes.edu/sans/) and invited all campus constituents to take part all activities including the April 23rd Wellness Walk on April 23rd.
V. OTHER BUSINESS
Elections:
Dr. Khoza asked everyone to consider nominations for the position of Senate Chair, Co-Chair, Secretry, and Parliamentarian. Moved by Joseph Bree. Seconded by Dr. William Talley. The nominations will be announced
4 at the April Senate meeting. Notifications should be sent to Mr. Joseph Bree and regular updates will be made on the Senate page.
