2004 BLACKJACK SHIRAZ !! $44.95 REGION: BENDIGO, VICTORIA Blackjack have produced a lovely shiraz in 2004. Archetypal Bendigo shiraz – big, soft, juicy shiraz flavours with christmas cake, spice and coffee overtones; rich and soft and delicious. "Produced from the hillside vineyards of BlackJack and aged in American and French oak barriques for 18 months prior to bottling. The name 'BlackJack' derives from an American sailor who jumped ship during the gold-rush days of the 1850s and 1860s and earned himself this nickname." James Halliday "This is firmer than the Block 6 of the same vintage, and arguably a smidge better. It's got a slightly chalky edge, which I like, especially as it's matched to lovely, plummy, minty, serious dark fruit, the tannins starting from halfway through the palate and richocheting on from there. Taut, tight, ripe and terrific. Drink: 2010-2016." Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front - 93 points "Recently, I got to taste the new 2004 release of the BlackJack Shiraz in the company of some of its esteemed older vintage brothers stretching back to the inaugural 1994 vintage release of this wine. And really, the tasting was testimony, yet again, to the fact that we drink too many of our reds far too early and young and we don’t give them enough time and the full credit they deserve for their ageing ability, development capacity and their remarkable ability to withstand time, evolve stylistically and become a better wine that can be more suited to food. The 2004 Blackjack shiraz: Deep purple crimson - candy shop sweet dark black liquorice, blueberry, hints of deep rich plum - young still - a touch raw - an elegant style - smooth and rich blackberry on the palate with liquorice and plums - lingering with well integrated oak - quite a good length with at least 5-7 years ahead of it. Try with Bangalow pork belly." Paul Ippolito, www.webwombat.com.au "Award winners virtually every year from 1996 on, Ian McKenzie and Ken Pollack have just released their '04 range and as usual it will be early birds and worm territory. The shiraz has, as ever, intense berry fruit, a lovely tannic structure and great length." Jeff Gordon, The Melbourne Times "This is the 12th release from our original shiraz plantings in the Harcourt sub-district of Bendigo. Fermentation took place in traditional open fermenters, with hand-plunging of the cap ensuring complete but gentle extraction of colour and flavour. The wine was matured in American oak barriques for 22 months. Garnett in colour. Aromas of plum, mocha coffee and chocolate. Rich plate of sweet Shiraz fruit, with good length and long lingering flavour. Lovely balance between fruit and tannins. Cellar 5-10 years. " Winery Notes Drink Now to 20013.
