11. Mobile Health Networks 6.16 Appleton Tower, The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, EH8 9LE
MHN develops and provides a range of solutions from application software to secure networks for the challenges faced in a clinical environment. We believe that the most effective way to manage patient data is for each specific department to have access to tailored information management tools.
The MHN proposition is to make ' real time data - simple to use ' providing easy front end tools to simplify the hospital/patient data chain. This is delivered by the DAP platform a) PDAtrix – allows medical workers to quickly obtain up to date patient information on a mobile device
What we offer: The PDAtrix system allows medical workers to quickly obtain up to date patient information on a mobile device.
Currently, the best form of clinical data recording access it through paper based patient notes. These notes are made in duplicate and can contain large tables of numbers and charts. While extremely dynamic and useful, errors can happen, such as bad readings due to human error in transcription. Access to data in paper form is also problematic, having to manually index tables and search through lengthy notes is slow.
A mobile, hand-held computer based system would reduce error and speed up data access times. Error reduction will be provided through integration with the MHN DAP, gathering error-free data from monitoring devices while data access times will be reduced through innovative yet simple data visualisation and search software.
The system uses the Java MIDP platform, providing interoperability with a large range of mobile devices. The PDAtrix system provides a front end interface for the clinical profession tailored to their speciality. It provides secure communications using the same network as the DAP or other medical information networks, also ensuring that no sensitive data is never stored on the mobile device.
MHN will provide localized customization of the system, working alongside the medical professional and incorporating task specific functionality as per their daily needs.
b) Data Acquisition Platform – enables the automatic capture and recording of real-time clinical data from a variety of medical monitoring devices
What we offer: MHN's Data Acquisition Platform (DAP) enables the automatic capture and recording of real-time clinical data from a variety of medical monitoring devices.
It leverages cutting edge wireless and security protocols to provide robust and mobile data transfer and storage from a range of legacy and current medical monitors and infusion pumps.
How is Data Accessed?
Data gathered by the MHN DAP will be provided to existing patient record systems in hospitals, enabling them to provide an up to date, detailed picture of a patient's status. It will also be available through MHN's PDAtrix mobile display platform

14. Pixic An Taigh Donn, Gairloch, IV21 2DB http://www.pixic.co.uk/ a) A fall and wellbeing detector that does not need to be worn
What we offer: This detector looks like a power adaptor and plugs into the standard electric socket and phone line. It then senses for falls and if a fall is detected it phones a family member/friend or carer and raises and alarm. A simpler version is also possible that raises a local alarm (i.e. within the same house/building) and does not need a phone line connection.
The product can also sense footfall so can raise an alarm if an abnormal footfall pattern occurs (none/at night etc.)
The product is expected to retail at around £85. It is very simple to set up – can be done in less than 1 min
Step 1: Unpack Step 2: Enter phone number to call in case of alarm Step 3: Plug into electric socket and phone socket (double adapter provided to allow existing phone line to continue). That’s it. The entire room containing the sensor is then being monitored.
While the product is being developed for the benefit of assisted living for the elderly the same technology can be used as a breathing and wellbeing detector for babies and infants. Here the technology has the advantage over current solutions of not requiring a mat (which creates difficulty as the child has to sleep directly on the mat) and also better differentiation between breathing and other stimulus. The technology could be used as an add-in to existing baby monitors.
What are we looking for: Licensees, OEMs developing healthcare monitors and devices, marketing and distribution partners.
b) Innovative new acoustic signal processing technology
What we offer: Pixic has just won the SMART:Scotland award for an innovative new acoustic signal processing technology which can bring significant cost and performance benefits to the telecare device market.
12
Pixic’s core technology has the following significant advantages over current solutions in telecare (i.e. pendant based alarms, or MEM devices worn on the wrist or belt)
• Does not need to be worn – anecdotal evidence is that 75% of worn alarms are not worn when needed, and therefore useless. • No issues for night time use (70% of falls take place at night when worn sensors are even less likely to be worn). • Smart – can detect falls accurately – MEMs based alarms can be confused by sitting down etc. • Can also sense footfall and therefore can act as a wellness sensor. • Ability to ring family member rather than call centre. This also means no monthly subscription charges (typically £144/yr). As the sensors are roughly the same price as call- centre based solutions our solution therefore much lower overall cost.
What are we looking for: Pixic is new to this market and has just received the SMART:Scotland award to develop its fall detection core technology. Over the next few months it will be seeking strategic partners to help confirm the best product application for its technology as well as establish optimum routes to market.
