Happy and Friendly Reaching Everyone S Needs

Ysgol Hafren, Park Lane,

Newtown. SY16 1EG (01686) 626143 [email protected] Issue No. 16 Friday January 15th 2016 BUSY TIMES! After a week settling back into the routine, all classes have started the year and new topics with a bang. With lots already going on, it promises to be an exciting time all round! I am really impressed with the work ethic and the way and speed in which all children settle down to work in their lessons and we have started the new year off with great attitudes to learning and school. School Closures – LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW!! I just want to remind you of the procedures if the school was forced to close due to ‘extreme weather conditions’. Firstly, I will strive to make a decision as early as possible on any given morning (by 8 o’clock at the latest) after talking with staff, our friends at Ladywell Green and taking into consideration all Health and Safety matters. Only in the very extreme cases will the school close! We will inform you of any closure through our school text messaging service which has now been updated. You are also able to find out whether the school is open or closed by phoning the school office in the morning or, if the lines are busy you can also find out on the news section of the school website www.hafren.powys.sch.uk or Powys County Council website www.powys.gov.uk. You can also register for free ‘Text Alerts’ from Powys County Council. And then there is our school Facebook page which will also inform you of any decision. The likelihood is that we’ll always be open , but I just want you to be prepared just in case. #thecoldneverbotheredmeanyway! STAYLITTLE As part of our year 6 end of year experiences, we have arranged a trip to Staylittle Outdoor Education Centre. This really is an excellent visit and one which the children will remember for a long time. Letters for this visit were sent out this week, however, there was a slight confusion with the cost. It is set by the centre and this year will be £125. If you are interested in sending your child, please complete and return the form to Mrs Bowen or Miss Rees by March 11th. Child’s Name:………………………………… Signed:……………………………………… Dosbarth Bedw: (Mrs Bridges) Bedw have worked very hard this week. In literacy we have been learning all about report writing. We looked at a report on elephants and over the next few weeks we will write about our own safari animal. Some of us have given a talk on a safari animal to the class. Mrs Bridges was so pleased with the work that we had put in to it. In maths we have been multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100. We have also learnt about direction and have looked at a map of the world and Africa. We were glad to be able to go swimming again. #onsafari Dosbarth Ceirios: (Mrs Grosvenor) gan Milly a Luis We have been adding pairs of numbers using the partitioning method, some of us managed to do this with 3-digit numbers, wow! In the I.C.T suite we started our numeracy challenge where we are using the internet to obtain lots of facts about Kenya and Wales. Then we are going to compare the size of the countries, the popularities, height of their tallest mountain, largest animal etc. etc. We have read the creation story to discover how Christians believe our world was created. We learnt that God worked so hard that he did it all in six days and on the seventh day he rested, which is why we as supposed to have our ‘Day of rest’ on a Sunday. We have been listening to some typical African music and trying to identify the instruments we heard. Afterwards we composed our own rhythms with percussion instruments. Ollie and Ozzie were our drum keepers! #makesomenoise Dosbarth Celyn: (Mrs Lloyd-Grew) gan Olivia a Jason This week has been flat-out. On Monday we learnt how to add and subtract decimal numbers to make the next whole number e.g. 367.8 + ___ = 368 with the challenge increasing each day. In Literacy we started to write a play script and some of us helped Miss Rees with her assembly. Our topic is recycling and we saw a video about recycling bottles in Uganda the name of the lady was Lorna she re-used plastic bottle for many different purposes. For example she used bottles as a sola light and stuck them in the roof. We then had to think of our uses for plastic bottles and draw diagrams of how we would re-use them. Some of us were really imaginative! #talkingtrash Dosbarth Onnen: gan Ruby, Daisy and Darcy. This week in Dosbarth Onnen, in maths, we were doing place value and have finished the week multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. In literacy we have been preparing for writing our own play scripts about rubbish. We did a Big Write on Thursday because we were making sure our play scripts would make sense. In science the class felt different materials and we had to sort all of the different materials into solids, liquids and Gases, including shaving foam, whippy cream, Happy And Friendly – Reaching Everyone’s Needs balloon, salt, sugar and many more. We had a great week in class Onnen!
