The Headquarters of the 1st Clanfield Scout Group Situated on the southern edge of the South Downs National Park, Clanfield is just 5 miles south of Petersfield and 15 miles north of the City of Portsmouth with its Historic Naval Heritage and seaside. The new “Eco” friendly building Hyden Lodge, was officially opened on the 18th September 2010 by Wayne Bulpitt the UK National Commissioner for Scouts. The building has a main hall with separate meeting room, a fully equipped “catering standard” kitchen, two accessible toilets with shower facilities and girls and boys toilets. Outside there is ample car parking and a large lawned area for camping which includes a camp fire circle. The building itself is heated by a ground source heat pump which fuels the under floor heating system. Solar panels heat the water and generate electricity. Rainwater is used to flush the toilets and Low Energy lighting is used throughout the building. Hyden Lodge is situated in the old part of Clanfield in a quiet lane which leads directly on to a footpath up to woods, giving easy access to Butser Hill, Queen Elizabeth Country Park and the South Downs. Nearby, (15 mins walk) is the “Butser Ancient Farm” and at East Meon a longer walk or short drive is “The Sustainability Centre”. 4 minutes walk away, is a convenience store, fish and chip shop (closed mondays) takeaways, St James Church and The Rising Sun, which serves food and offers accomodation. Buses (No 37) run hourly to Petersfield (nearest Train Station) and Waterlooville from here, (not Sundays) At the other end of the village a 15 min walk (see map) there is a much larger selection of shops, Costcutter stores, a Co-op, Greengrocer/Florist, an excellent Butcher, Chemist, Trade centre/Hardware, Opticians, Hairdressers, Newsagents and Doctors Surgery. A more regular bus (No 8) runs from this end of the village at 15min intervals which will take you into Portsmouth and Gunwharf Quays for all the Royal Naval Maritime Heritage including HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, the Spinnaker Tower and of course the shopping centres and beach.
