Foreword

This is my very first FAQ, it is only for "amateur skinners" like me, but I tried to explain everything in detail for almost total beginners. I am french (expect non academical english).

This will not have been possible whithout Autocept clues on jk2files.com skinning forum. Thanks !

I am still in the process understanding the spawning possibilities, so there may be some mistakes here. I hope I will update this mini FAQ later.

______

Spawning ?

Spawning a Non Playable Character (npc) during Single Player (sp) game gives you the opportunity to fight against any imperial or reborn like character you want, as well as asking for the help of rebel forces or charismatic jedis. (woo-hoo !!!)

To do this, during sp game, open the console (press at the same time shift and the blank key at the left of the 1/& key). Allow cheat mode by typing : helpusobi 1 then enter.

Type "npc spawn followed by the name of every npc of the original game, then enter.

Exemple : npc spawn luke

Pretty cool hu?

This FAQ explains how to make "spawnable"any extra characters model or skin you have. And how to modify the existing npc's stats.

For that, you will need :

-A new skin or model (!!)

-To modify your skin's data (mostly it's name).

-To make a modified npcs.cfg file for all the skins or models you want to spawn, and add it to one (and only one) of your skin's pk3.

______

1.Rename your skin and modify it :

You will have to change your skins name. It is unavoidable, plus it will allow you to use those skins without interfering with using it in MP games.

You need to make a new pk3 file :

Take one skin (one of your own or one you get on the web and like), I will use Mace Windu by Toonces for the exemple.

Get it at : http://www.jk2files.com/file.info?ID=8779 make a folder on your desktop (let's call it "temp") unzip here your skin's pk3 file.

Delete useless folders like "scripts" and only keep "models", "sounds" and "shaders". Sounds and shaders are optionnals.

Open the "model" folder, then the "players" folder, there you will find a folder named after the skin : rename it :

This is very important : if you want your skin or model to work correctly you will have to rename it after one of the model which does exist in the game in different versions : the first letters of the name are recognized as a code and does influence the weapon used by the model, and his alignement (good/neutral/bad)

-If you want a jedi partner : rename it : jedi_yourskin

-If you want a forceuser adversary : rename it : reborn_yourskin or shadowtrooper_yourskin (I have only try with reborn in so far)

-If you want a gunner ally : rename it : bespincop_yourskin (he will get a bryar pistol) or rebel_yourskin (he will get a blaster). I don’t know a way to get any other weapon for an ally.

-If you want a gunner adversary, you will have a large choice of name to use :

-gran_yourskin -imp_yourskin -rodian_yourskin -st_yourskin -swamptrooper_yourskin

Your choice will depend on the weapon used : choose a rodian, you will have a sniper, a stormtrooper (st) you will have a blaster user...

DO NOT USE ANY MAIN CHARACTER NAME like Tavion or Luke

Beware : it MUST be "reborn_yourskin" for vilains or "jedi_yourskin" for good guys.

Exemple : "samuel_l" becomes jedi_windu"

Open the folder and open the model_default.skin in your notepad. Here you have to change every line that mentions the character folder name.

Exemple : l_leg,models/players/samuel_l/legs.jpg becomes l_leg,models/players/jedi_windu/legs.jpg

Save it.

If your skins does have more than one version, do the same for every .skin files. Note the name of the different versions, it will be usefull later. Also open the .surf files, if there are some (in your notepad) and note the lines, you will use it later.

Now open the sounds folder and look for the folder named after your skin or model. Again change the name by "jedi_yourskin" or "reborn_yourskin"

______

2.Modify the npcs.cfg

You will find this file in your base folder (Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast/GameData/Base). For those who have not done it yet you will have to unzip the assets0.pk3 to find it.

Look for npcs.cfg in the "ext_data" folder.

Make a folder named "ext_data" in your temp folder, copy the npcs.cfg in it. Open it in the notepad. Don't pay attention to the beginning, although it may be modified too, but I can't help on that. Be aware too that any change here will affect all SP game.

Soon you will find the "code" (let's name it this way) of every Non playable Character. It will look that way :

Desann { fullName "Desann" playerModel desann saberColor red rank captain reactions 3 aim 3 move 5 aggression 3 evasion 5 intelligence 5 hfov 160 vfov 160 scale 135 height 78 crouchheight 42 width 18 playerTeam enemy enemyTeam player // race human class desann yawSpeed 120 walkSpeed 55 runSpeed 200 snd desann sndcombat desann sndjedi desann health 500 dismemberProbHead 100 dismemberProbArms 100 dismemberProbLegs 100 dismemberProbHands 100 dismemberProbWaist 100 }

Basicaly, you will find the model info, the rank, the stats, the class.

Copy one npc 's code (you'd better choose a character which is close to the skin or model you are working on). Paste it between too npc's code. You will now edit this code to fit your skin.

Here are the lines you will have to edit : npc name :

Name of the npc, this is the name you will have to type after the npc spawn command. To make one of your skin become a spawnable character, This has to begin by "reborn_" or by "jedi_". Use the name you choose to renmae the skin's folder. exemple : jedi_windu full name :

Does not affect your spawnable skins, delete this line.

Player model :

That's the name of the model you are using, you can change it whithout changing the npc name (for instance, put one of your skin's name in place of luke, when you type npc spawn luke, you will get your skin instead of luke. But it won't work normaly if you change only that. exemple : jedi_windu This line will not change if you make different versions of your skin.

Surf :

Here are the two lines (surf on and surf off) that will allow you to get rid of some undesired part of the model you are using. I will not explain it in detail, for I don't know much about it. If your skin does have a .surf file, open it and reproduce the lines here, it should work. exemple : (to get rid of Windu's robed) : surfOff "robe torso_robe" exemple 2 : Jedif is basically jan'model, it's surf files goes : surfOff "torso_vest hips_chaps torso_computer head_goggles torso_comp hips_belt" surfOn "torso_augment_off hips_augment_off hips_torso_off" custom skin :

If your skin does have more than one version, and/or team colors, you will have to make a new code for each version. Use the default code you will get by following those explanations, and change the npc name and add the line : custom skin blue. Do it for every version of your skin, a code by version, only change the npc name and the custom skin line. exemple : default version : jedi_windu { fullName "Windu, Mace" playerModel jedi_windu

exemple : blue version : jedi_windu_blue { fullName "Windu, Mace" playerModel jedi_windu customskin blue sabercolor :

Pretty simple, use the available colors. if your skin is a gunner, delete this line. rank :

It seems this has something to do with the weapon your character is using. I still have to figure it out. Feel free to experiment... scale :

This affects the scale of the npc. Regular height is scale 100, yoda is 55, desann is 135. you may want to change the original npc here to make the game more realistic (but it may affect the sp game; I haven't try it). playerTeam : writte "enemy" for the remnants, "player" for alliance npc enemy team : writte "player" for the remnants, "enemy" for alliance npc

BEWARE TO MATCH YOUR NATURAL ALIGNEMENT : Don’t make your new “reborn” act as an ally, the skin will not work correctly (his weapon will be hanged between his legs...) race : "human" for most of the characters (for instance, Desann is "human", "klingon" for alien such as rodians, grans, "bot" for droids. If you ure trying to make a force user, I suggest that you use human here. This has to be tried for strange configurations like rodian reborns or jedi grans... ;) class : you don't have much choice here : write "jedi" for allied force users, "reborn" for ennemy force users. For gunners, I don't know yet... Don't use "kyle" for your npc is not gonna move, don't use "tavion" or "luke" etc... it will make your npc unusable.

Sound : you can use the original sounds of the skins here. exemple :

snd jedi_windu sndcombat jedi_windu sndjedi jedi_windu

All the rest is character stats : change whatever you want, read other's npc code to make something realistic, experiment...

The code is done.

Full exemple for a jedimaster Mace Windu without robe : jedi_windu { fullName "Windu, Mace" playerModel jedi_windu surfOff "robe torso_robe" saberColor purple rank captain reactions 5 aim 5 move 5 aggression 5 evasion 5 intelligence 5 scale 105 playerTeam player enemyTeam enemy class jedi yawSpeed 140 walkSpeed 55 runSpeed 200 // race human snd jedi_windu sndcombat jedi_windu sndjedi jedi_windu health 500 dismemberProbHead 0 dismemberProbArms 0 dismemberProbLegs 0 dismemberProbHands 0 dismemberProbWaist 0 } save the npcs.cfg

______

3.Make a new .pk3 file : Now you should have two to four folders in your temp folder :

-models : contains : "players" which contains "jedi_yourskin" in which every model_default[].skin is modified

-ext_data : contains your new npcs.cfg

-sounds : contains : "chars" which contains "jedi_yourskin" -Shaders (unchanged)

(sounds and shaders are optionnals)

Make a new zip file on your desk, name it after your skin (exemple : Mace_windu.zip). Be sure not to name it like the original pk3.

Open it with winzip wizard. Choose "update an existing file", then "let me find it", select the zip file you just created. Choose "add folders", browse to your temp folder, select the model folder. this way add ext_data, sounds and shaders also, then select "zip now".

Rename the .zip file as a .pk3 file. (this is easy to do but you will eventually have to modify an option of your computer ("mask extensions") ______

Note :

The npcs.cfg files should now mention the code for every new skin or model you want to spawn, as well as all the content of the original npcs.cfg file. THE ext_data FOLDER SHOULD BE IN ONLY ONE OF YOUR NEW PK3 FILES. More than one npcs.cfg in your pk3 files will make this work useless. So I suggest you move any minimod's pk3 out of your base folder if you have trouble spawning.

______

4. Finish the job :

You are almost done now :

Put every new pk3 filesk3 file in your base folder (Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast/GameData/Base)

During SP game, open the console, allow cheat mode by typing : helpusobi 1 then enter. Type npc spawn jedi_yourskin and enter. exemple npc spawn jedi_windu

Enjoy !!!
