Four separate recognitions are available. W – Weaning Weight G – Feed Gain Test Y – Yearling Weights P – Progeny of Dam

WEANING WEIGHTS (W) Calves must be weighed between 160 and 250 days of age. To adjust to the standard age of 205 days, deduct the estimated birth weight (70 lbs. in all cases) from the actual weight of the calf. Divide the results by the age in days at weighing to determine the average daily gain. Multiply the result by 205 days to get the 205 day gain and then add on the 70 lbs, originally deducted. Now to adjust for age of dam at date of birth of the calf, multiply the above answer by the following.

AGE OF DAM Year Month Factor Year Month Factor Year Month Factor 2 0 - 1 1.16 4 0 - 1 1.04 11 0 - 2 1.07 2 - 3 1.15 2 - 5 1.03 3 - 5 1.08 4 - 5 1.14 6 - 11 1.02 6 - 8 1.09 6 - 7 1.13 5 0 - 11 1.01 9 - 11 1.10 8 - 9 1.12 6 0 - 11 1.00 12 0 - 1 1.11 10 - 11 1.11 7 0 - 11 1.00 2 - 3 1.12 3 0 - 1 1.10 8 0 - 11 1.01 4 - 5 1.13 2 - 3 1.09 9 0 - 5 1.02 6 - 7 1.14 4 - 5 1.08 6 - 11 1.03 8 - 9 1.15 6 - 7 1.07 10 0 - 3 1.04 13 & older 10 - 11 1.16 8 - 9 1.06 4 - 7 1.05 0 - 11 1.16 10 - 11 1.05 8 - 11 1.06

To adjust for the type of feed here there is no adjustment for calves nursing and on pasture. For calves permitted to creep feed deduct 25 pounds from their 205 day weight. For calves on a nurse cow and permitted access to creep feed, deduct 75 pounds from their weight after it was adjusted for the age of the cow. For gain certification the 205 day adjusted weight must be at least 475 lbs. for bulls and 425 lbs. for heifers. Official Use AMERICAN HIGHLAND CATTLE ASSOCIATION Bull______Application No. ______Cow ______

FEED GAIN TEST (G) The feed gain test for bulls must cover a period of at least 140 days and should start as soon as practical after weaning. Feed and water should be available for at least two hours prior to taking of all weights. The final weight should be taken on completion of the test or as soon as possible thereafter, but if taken prior to the 140th day on test the weight shall be treated as if taken on the 140th day. The final weight should be taken at the approximate same time of day and if possible on the same scale as the initial weight. Females are not eligible. Minimum qualifications are for Bulls: Average daily gain of 2.60 pounds weight per day and weight per day of age 2.4 pounds.

YEARLING WEIGHTS (Y) To obtain information for use in computing yearling weights, animals should be weighed between 12 and 16 months of age, but weights taken prior to 365 days of age will be treated as if taken on the 365th day. Animals completing the 140 day test younger than a year of age should be reweighed at 365 days of age. To qualify bulls must have a weight per day of age of 2.4 pounds or more and must qualify in either weaning weight or feed gain test. Heifers must have a weight per day of age of 1.9 pounds or more.

PROGENY OF DAM (P) A cow is eligible for entry when (a) the weaning weight of three progeny is equal to or exceeds the minimum standards and is gain certified, or (b) the gain during a feed gain test of two sons is equal or exceeds the minimum and is gain certified, or (c) the yearling weight of three progeny equals or exceeds the minimum and is gain certified through the American Highland Cattle Association.
