Distance: How do we measure length and width?

Distance is how far it is between two things. It could be how long, wide, or tall something is.

Accurate is how correct something is. 4 1. Directions: Measure the length of the table (the long way) and the width of the table (the short way). Table length Table width (how long) (how wide)

hands hands

straws straws

cm cm

2. Compare the class’s answers. Which is the most accurate (correct) way to measure length and width? Explain your answer.

3. Give an example of when you needed to know the distance of something.

Estimating: How do we estimate and measure length?

To estimate means to make a good guess

5 Object Estimated Actual Difference Length Length (Subtract)

Straw

Fingernail

Chair Height

Pencil Length

2. Why might estimating be a useful thing to do?

* Give an example of when you have estimated the length or width of something.

6 ** Estimating Word Problem:

7 Notebook

Thumb

Mini Gluestick

Large Gluestick

Shoe

2. Look at the differences between your estimates and your measurements. What do you notice? Does it get easier to estimate the more you do it? Explain.

* Find more things to estimate and measure.

Object Estimated Actual Length Difference Length (Subtract) 8 Inches and Centimeters

Object Centimeters Inches

9 Length of my hand

2. Which is longer, one cm or one inch? How do you know?

10 11 Mass

*Mass is how heavy something is. We weigh mass with grams.

Object Estimated Measured Difference Mass Mass (subtract)

2. When would you want to know the mass (weight) of something?

3. When might you need to estimate the mass of something?

12 Mass of Water

1. Mass of Wet Mass Mass of water absorbed Sponge (g) - Dry Sponge (g) =

- =

2. How did you find the mass of the water in the sponge?

3. Were you surprised by the mass the sponge absorbed? Why or why not?

13 4. Follow the same steps from above to find the mass of the water in the containers. Containe Mass of full Mass of empty Mass of water r container container Number

5. How did you find the mass of the water in each container? Explain your strategy. You can use words and drawings.

16 Food Kilometers

1kilometer = 1,000 meters

1. How far did your food travel? Food Distance in kilometers (km) Location

2. What is one good thing about food traveling from far away?

3. What is one bad thing about food traveling from far away?

17 Measuring Capacity

Capacity is how much fits in a container

We can measure the capacity of a container in milliliters (ml)

Object Estimated Measured Difference Capacity Capacity (Subtract)

Cup, mark A

Cup, mark B

Cup, mark C

Cup, mark D

2. When might you want to know how much fits in a container?

18 Volume

Volume is the 3D space something takes up.

1. Pour a volume of 15ml in each container. Draw and label each below.

2. Why does the volume of the liquid look different, depending on the container?

19 3. Pour a volume of 15ml into the cup. Pour a volume of 30ml into the second cup. Weigh the mass of the 15ml cup.

Mass of 15ml cup:______

Mass of 30ml cup:______

4. Which cup has a greater mass? Explain why.

5.

20 Capacity Versus Volume

I recently opened a can of soda and noticed that it was not completely full. You may have noticed the same thing. I started wondering if the soda company was really giving me my money’s worth. The label on the can says 355 ml, but does that refer to the capacity of the can, or the volume of soda in the can?

How can we find out if 355ml is the can’s capacity (how much fits when the can is full) or how much soda they actually sell you (the volume of soda)?

1. My plan to find the answer will be______

2. My answer is______

3. My strategy for finding the answer was______

4. Why wouldn’t the soda company fill the can all the way?

21 *When would you need to know the volume of a liquid (like water)? Give an example.

2. What is a more accurate way to measure temperature, feeling it with your fingers, or using a thermometer? Explain your answer.

3. When would you want to know exactly how cold or hot something is? Give two examples.
