Charles G. Taylor Elementary School

March, 2017 Newsletter Charles G. Taylor Elementary School 196 South Street, Foxborough, MA. 02035 T: 508-543-1607

From the Principal,

This has been an interesting week at Taylor School. There was the excitement of a snow day (hopefully, the final one this winter), and then we were introduced to our two finalist candidates for the next Taylor Principal, Moira Rogers and Linda Christopheri. Both candidates visited classrooms so students could share what makes Taylor a great place to be a principal. Staff members and families were able to ask their own series of questions and provide feedback for each candidate. The next step is for Superintendent Spinelli to put all the pieces together and make a final determination. I expect we will learn that decision in the next week.

Talent Show – Students in grades 3 and 4 are practicing and preparing their talents for the Taylor School Talent Show on Wednesday, March 29 at 6:30. We hope you’ll be able to join in on the fun to cheer our students on for this enjoyable out.

Page 1 of 16 March Madness Taylor School Style – If you come through the Grade 3/4 area, you’ll find our version of March Madness, the Battle of the Books. Students in each grade vote on which book they prefer and they work their way through the brackets until an overall victor is determined. Thanks to Danna Collins and Alicia Sham for arranging this great activity.

Save the Date – Taylor School Field Day is planned for Friday, June 9. I’ve heard parents like to know so they can plan to be here to help out. Details to follow. Joe Russo

From The Nurse:

I am writing this reminder as a reminder to all about snacks and food in the classrooms. The policies for snack and food are approved by the Foxborough School Committee and can be found on the main web page of the Foxborough Public Schools.

Snacks are eaten in the classrooms. For all students to be safe, the teachers read the food labels. If you send a bulk packaged snack such as gold fish with your child, the original food label must be with the snack or a picture of the ingredient label must be emailed to the teacher. This needs to be done only once. No home baked food will be eaten in the smaller confines of the classroom during snack time; the student can eat this in the cafeteria during lunchtime. This is because even with the list of ingredients we cannot be certain of no cross-contamination during the baking process. If your child does not have a safe snack, he or she will be sent to the nurse’s office for an apple. A safe snack reminder note will be sent home. Again, this is for the safety of all students. Some classes change rooms during the day and some have visiting “buddies”. It is important that all students feel safe in the school environment.

During the school year there are three parties: Halloween, Winter, and Valentine’s. Students are encouraged to bring a “Party in a bag” snack for themselves. If food is provided for the classroom, only healthy snacks such as fruits and vegetables can be served. Food cannot be used as a manipulative, such as used for playing bingo or making a craft. This is for the inclusion of all students especially those with food allergies or intolerances or with a religious reason.

These policies are meant to provide a safe learning environment for all students. Life threatening allergies and obesity are just two of the factors that went into the development of these policies. Recommendations from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and the Massachusetts Department of

Page 2 of 16 Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) formed the basis of these policies. MDPH also set the guidelines for school nutrition standards for schools.

If you have any questions please feel free to speak with your child’s classroom teacher, the principal, or the nurse. We want to ensure all students feel safe in this wonderful learning environment called Taylor School. Thank you for your cooperation.

From Guidance:

Hello!

Each year, the 3rd and 4th graders work on posters to enter in the annual MARC (Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center) Anti-Bullying Poster Contest at Bridgewater State University. Each student group has to write a paragraph and create a poster that answers the contest question. Here are this year’s questions:

- 3rd Grade: Has a friend ever helped you when someone else was being mean, or just when you felt badly? How did they help you?

- 4th Grade: How do teachers help kids who are being bullied? Does it help to talk to a teacher?

The 3rd and 4th graders worked so hard on their posters! I think we’ll have some award winners this year! All entries were sent in to the contest on March 15, 2017. Hopefully, we will here from MARC about award winners after April Vacation.

You can find information about guidance lessons, available supports, and much more on my website (to access, go to Taylor School’s homepage and click on the guidance link or go directly to http://taylorschoolcounselor.weebly.com/).
