637 Arrow Squadron Sponsoring Committee

637 ARROW SQUADRON SPONSORING COMMITTEE PO Box 72035 Old Orchard Post Office Burnaby BC, V5H 4P9 Dear Parents/Guardians, Welcome to the 637 Arrow Squadron Air Cadets 2017/2018 Training Year! The Board of Directors of the Squadron Sponsoring Committee is proud to support a great program for your children. The 637 Arrow Squadron Air Cadet Program offers a rich roster of activities that includes:

 Aviation training  Supervised marksmanship training –  Survival training exercises shooting with air daisy rifles  Gliding  Band training -some instruments may  Power Flying be provided depending on situation  Training related field trips First-Aid training  Community citizenship activities Effective speaking training  Leadership opportunities

Wow…with a program like this, the natural question to ask is “Who pays for all these fun activities?” Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND) funds the basic cadet training program, which includes classroom instruction, aviation training, survival training exercises, gliding and uniforms. In addition, cadets have the opportunity to attend a variety of summer camps at no additional cost.

Other Squadron expenses and optional activities within the cadet program are paid for with funds generated by the members of the Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC), assisted by the Cadets and Parents. "But they told me the Cadet Program is free"… Yes, the Cadet program is free for the mandatory training as prescribed by the Department of National Defence. However, power flying, some fieldtrips, facility rentals, administrative costs, team costs, insurance and more are not. The Squadron Sponsoring Committee is faced with generating the revenue needed to fund the extras not covered by the Department of National Defence. Therefore, we must ask each cadet to contribute $225.00 per year so we can continue to offer superb training opportunities. Out of this $225, $100 is sent directly to the Air Cadet League of Canada, British Columbia Provincial Committee. The British Columbia Provincial Committee fee maintains and insures 12 gliders and 6 tow planes, provides insurance for volunteers, covers BCPC office and administration costs, and pays for legal services retained for the benefit of BCPC and Sponsoring Committees. No child will be denied entry into the cadet program or participation in ANY squadron activities due to a families’ financial situation. Confidential requests for fee exemptions must be made to the Sponsoring Committee Chair or Vice-Chair no later than October 5, 2017. 637 ARROW SQUADRON SPONSORING COMMITTEE PO Box 72035 Old Orchard Post Office Burnaby BC, V5H 4P9 Additional information for Parents/Guardians about the cadet program and the SSC:
