Critiquing the Day Away Instructor: Judith Speizer Crandell Tuesday, May 17, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Regina Conference room Cost: $32 members; $44 non-members
Is there a writing project you feel blocked from completing? Is writing’s solitary nature cutting you off from helpful comments? Would a small community of writers reviewing your work be just what you need? Then you might consider signing up for one or more of these workshops, which are stand-alone events, not continuous classes.
Bring in copies of a piece you’re working on for feedback, whether it’s a memoir, a short story, a novel excerpt, nonfiction or poetry. The instructor leads the group in a constructive critiquing process that allows individuals to take their work home and rework, polish and make it a true gem. Whether your goal is to take your writing to the next step by submitting it for publication or to create copies for your family, this class is perfect. Each seminar focuses on the journey of writing. Bring your lunch and take a break in each seminar.
Judith Speizer Crandell, a published, award-winning writer and teacher with an MA in English, was granted a Yaddo residency and a place at the 2013 AROHO creative retreat as well as a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Writer grant. She uses her life as the basis of her own writing.
Domestic Terrorism: the Threat Within Instructor: John Yerman, J.D. Tuesdays, May 17-24, 1:30 to 3 p.m. Cost: $22 members; $34 non-members
Terrorism seems to be everywhere now even close to home. How can homegrown terrorists affect us? This two-week class examines the organizations and groups which may pose a threat to the U.S.
John Yerman is an Instructor of Sociology & Justice Studies at Lourdes University and earned his JD at The University of Toledo.
Supervolcanoes Instructor: Dr. Laura Megeath Thursday, May 26, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Appold Planetarium Cost: $14 members; $26 non-members
Feel the Heat! Supervolcanoes explores rare types of volcanic eruptions that marshal the energy that lurks like a sleeping dragon beneath the surface of planet Earth. The story of these big blow outs is a tale of havoc and mayhem: mass extinctions, climate collapses and violence beyond anything humans have ever witnessed. Explore the impact of volcanism on Earth and other worlds in our solar system. Can a supervolcano erupt in our own time? The answer is surprisingly close to home. Continue the conversation in the Lourdes Café over lunch (price not included).
Dr. Laura Megeath is the Coordinator of Lifelong Learning and the Appold Planetarium.
