Gr. 4 Picasso Faces

In this project, students learned about Pablo Picasso and created Picasso-esque portraits using the elements of design to create unity.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a ground-breaking artist. He was one of the most prolific painters of all time, painting over 13,000 paintings and creating even more drawings, prints, and sculptures. Picasso co-founded the cubist style and was among the first to use collage as fine art. He was also a master portrait painter.

Picasso’s work changed dramatically over his life time, from realistic portraits to blue-hued paintings to flattened faces with misplaced features. It is this last style that students studied and used as inspiration for their own artworks. In these paintings, Picasso freely placed eyes, noses, ears, and mouths, and used bright, unexpected colors. He also repeated lines and colors to create unity in his paintings. In their work, students also tried to use these elements of design to create unity.

Here are some questions you can ask your student: 1. What are the elements of art? Why are they important? 2. Which of Picasso’s styles of painting is your favorite? 3. How can you use color to create unity in an artwork? 4. How can you use line and pattern to create unity in an artwork?
