Parents on Campus (P.O.C.)

Volunteer Guidelines

2016 – 2017

THANK YOU for taking time out of your busy schedule to be a part of our “Parents on Campus” program. PVIS teachers and staff have been informed about the program and greatly appreciate your support. We welcome you to become an active participant in the PVIS family of staff members.

As a POC volunteer you will assist in facilitating and maintaining a safe and friendly campus environment. Volunteers function within the administrative framework of the school, maintaining flexibility to meet changing needs and conditions. Volunteers assist the staff in reducing safety related distractions, which can interfere with our quality educational program here at PVIS.

Maintain a Positive Attitude

While we recognize that your volunteer service serves an important function, we also want you to enjoy your interaction with our students. Remember that you are here to promote a positive environment. Model this positive attitude by speaking in a friendly and welcoming manner with students, teachers and staff. Be helpful, assisting teachers and staff when needed. Please remember that you are a role model, dress and speak appropriately. Keep personal conversations at a minimum; children hear everything.

Your Role as a POC Volunteer

As a parent volunteer, your responsibility is to help maintain a safe and caring environment on campus. You are not to serve as campus security. However, we do appreciate a second set of eyes to help in keeping our campus calm and safe. . Resist the temptation to offer corrective advice. . It is not your role to correct student conduct or impose your own moral standards, but rather to deter negative conduct by your presence. . Feel comfortable reminding students about inappropriate language and picking up their trash. . Do not break up fights – get help from a staff member . Do not attempt to seize drugs or weapons. Inform a staff member. . Reinforce positive behavior with a smile and/or compliment. . Offer a helping hand if the opportunity presents itself. . Avoid traveling with another POC or staying in a group, spread out
