These five words seared through American television screens in May of 1963. James Baldwin, a preacher and novelist, declared his freedom from the chains of discrimination in an interview with Kenneth Clark and forever changed the conscience of black and white television owners. When asked if he was optimistic or pessimistic about the future of the nation, Baldwin made one thing clear: the fate of America lies within the ability to answer the question, why was the ‘nigger’ created? Born in Harlem in 1924, Baldwin grew up following in his father’s footsteps as a preacher, then went on to work on a railroad in New Jersey and eventually became a freelance writer and moved to Europe.

    1/20/16 SEAC Meeting Notes In attendance: Peggy Mereness Amanda Walwood Stephanie Mulcahey Denise Tyburski Karla Nagy Jesse Sawyer Amelia Nielsen January Thaw Supervisor Session recap The January Thaw Supervisor session went well, one of the big questions the group discussed was what next/how do we carry on the discussion among supervisors? Some suggestions included through a Facebook group or a shared google folder for supervisors that would allow them to upload documents, best practices, etc. SEAC would need to vet submitted items and help categorize them. Ultimately, the group decided that at this point the best next step would be a second session at Chataqua to continue the discussion and talk with supervisors about the best way to collect and share information between supervisors. SEAC could develop a list of possibilities and talk The Chatauqua session will be added to the next SEAC meeting agenda for further discussion. Student Employment Awards Student Employee of the Year Award All nominations will be submitted electronically this year through a google form that Peggy created. In the past nominations have come in through multiple ways so to ensure that everything comes in and nothing gets missed the google form was created. All of the responses will be captured in one spreadsheet which will also help with the review process. Peggy will send link to the spreadsheet to readers to review and rate Important Dates: Early February: Nomination form llink sent to supervisors February 16: Nominations due in the student employment office February 17-24: Readers review and rate March 2: Peggy sends our winner to national review committee March 30: National selection made April 28: Community Awards Recognition Lunch The timeline will be similar for all three awards, although we will have a little bit more time to review candidates for the two Macalester/internal awards: Reliability and Customer Service.

    2021-2022 LIVINGSTON COUNTY DIRECTORY of National, State, County, Township, City and Village Officials Compiled by: Elizabeth Hundley Livingston County Clerk Howell, Michigan The Courthouse you see today is the second courthouse to occupy this site. The first building was a brick Greek Revival structure in 1847. This courthouse was torn down to make room for the present Courthouse, which was built in 1889. The Richardson Romanesque building was designed by Albert E. French, a Detroit architect. The site was deeded to Livingston County with the stipulation that it be used for county court purposes. Located on Grand River Avenue in downtown Howell, the Courthouse stands stately and proud, with its clock tower visible for miles. Its main structural components are brick, Ohio blue stone, and slate. These materials were selected for their durability. William Kessler and Associates were commissioned in 1975 to update the Courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Pages. The Victorian atmosphere is enhanced by the restoration of the oak woodwork, braze hardware, and marble floors. It is further complemented by the restoration and recreation of the original colors and decorative paintings. Based on an updated access configuration, Lee Engineering (LEE) has prepared a preliminary assessment of the impact of those changes on the study performed for the multi-family residential development located in Arlington, Texas. The proposed access point to Arbrook Boulevard, described as the Northern Driveway, is moved west, and is limited to right turns in and right turns out. The updated site driveway location is shown in Figure 1. The existing lane configurations are shown in Figure 2. Figure 3 shows the resulting proposed lane configurations for the area roadways. The existing traffic volumes can be found in Figure 4. This study involved two (2) scenarios, with the Highlander Boulevard extension and without the Highlander Boulevard extension. Updates to the trip distribution and trip assignment have been made based on the changes to the driveway location provided by the client. For the scenario without the Highlander Boulevard extension, 35% of traffic was removed from the intersections of Embarcadero Drive and Collins Street and the Arbrook Boulevard and Collins Street. 19 trips were removed in the AM peak hour and 56 trips were removed in the PM peak hour. 20% of this traffic was added to eastbound Highlander Boulevard at Center Street.
