CE #1 – A Review of the Oregon Dental Practice Act & Updates from the Board (3 CEU) Friday, November 14, 2014 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Staff members from the Oregon Board of Dentistry will review the laws, rules, policies and procedures that regulate the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene in Oregon. This course will include discussion of the most “frequently asked questions” that are received in the OBD office. Participants will receive a copy of the Oregon Dental Practice Act, Administrative Rules and Other Related Statutes to review during the presentation.

Patrick D. Braatz has been Executive Director of the Oregon Board of Dentistry (OBD) since August 2003. Mr. Braatz is a 1984 graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point with a BS degree in Business Administration. Prior to serving at the OBD, Mr. Braatz was Administrator of the Division of Health for the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing. In this position, Mr. Braatz was responsible for 13 Heath Regulated Boards/Councils, one of which included the Wisconsin Dentistry Examining Board. Mr. Braatz served as a local and county elected official in Wisconsin for over 12 years, having served as a Member and President of the D.C. Everest School Board, Trustee for the Village of Rothschild, and Register of Deeds for Marathon County. Mr. Braatz is a Member and Past President of the American Association of Dental Administrators (AADA) and a member of the American Association of Dental Boards (AADB) where he served as a member of the AADB Executive Council. He currently serves as Chairman of the AADB Composite Committee and is a member of the AADB Membership Committee and AADB Non-Dues Revenue Committee.

Dr. Paul Kleinstub received a BS degree in Zoology from the Ohio State University in 1962 and received his DDS degree from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1966. During his 20 year career in the United States Air Force, he also completed a two-year General Dentistry Residency and received an MS degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston. He retired from the Air Force Dental Corps in 1986 after achieving the rank of Colonel. After a short stint in private practice, Dr. Kleinstub joined the staff of the Oregon Board of Dentistry. During his 24 year career with the OBD he has served as Investigator, Chief Investigator, Dental Director, and on two occasions as OBD’s Interim Executive Director.

CE#2 – Infection Control Update for Dental Hygienists in Oregon (3 CEU) Friday, November 14, 2014 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Dental hygienists must be current with all guidelines and regulations concerning infection control in the dental setting. This course will provide a review of CDC guidelines and recommendations for infection control practices in dentistry, focusing on the concept of standard precautions including hand hygiene, personal protective equipment and barriers, safe injection methods, and principles and processes of disposal, disinfection or sterilization of contaminated items and surfaces. Rationale for recommended practices will be discussed and scenarios will be presented to help the dental hygienist identify and reduce risk for the spread of infection to providers and patients. Management of occupational exposure will also be discussed.

Karla Kent, PhD, is a Professor of Integrative Biosciences at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Dentistry. She received her PhD from Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts and has been involved with basic science education of medical, dental and dental hygiene students at OHSU since 1990. Dr. Kent is currently Director of Quality Improvement and Health & Safety Officer for the OHSU School of Dentistry. She oversees infection control practices in the School of Dentistry and

1 supervises operations in the new central sterilization facility. Dr. Kent instructs dental students in infection control practices and provides updates on blood-borne pathogen exposure control to staff. She collaborates on research concerning patient safety and adverse events in dental settings. In addition to chairing the school’s Quality Improvement Committee, Dr. Kent serves on the OHSU Hospital Infection Control Committee, University Safety Committee, Worker Safety in Clinical Environment Committee, and the Research and Academic Emergency Planning Committee. She is a member of the Organization for Safety & Asepsis Procedures (OSAP).

Dental Hygiene Educator Program (3 CEU) Saturday, November 15, 2014 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Sponsored by Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

The purpose in coming together as dental hygiene educators is to create a yearly forum where there is a free exchange of educational ideas, an opportunity to network, and the opportunity to create and experience support for the valuable work we do in our educational programs developing dental hygienists for the future.

Goals of this program include: . To assist dental hygiene educators to align with the ADHA goals for the profession of dental hygiene to be LEADERS of change in the delivery of oral health care. . To discuss current curriculum goals and evaluate a philosophical commitment to the expansion of dental hygiene education. Graduates will need additional ‘soft skills’ and leadership development education to stay competitive in interdisciplinary healthcare models that will require more than their clinical skills and education. . To provide the opportunity to experience collegiality, the sharing of ideas, and the development of educational methodology skills in specific subject matter. . To support existing dental hygiene programs to seek excellence in the accreditation process by the free exchange of information to meet and exceed standards required by CODA . To promote 100% membership of faculty, both full- and part-time, in ADHA as a way of modeling full participation in the profession for all enrolled dental hygiene students.

Lynn Stedman, RDH, MA began her career as a clinical dental hygienist working in private dental offices. After 15 years of clinical dental hygiene practice, Lynn returned to graduate school and became a marriage and family therapist. Lynn then combined these two careers, practicing both on a part-time basis. For the past 8 years, Lynn has been the director of the Dental Hygiene Program at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Washington. Lynn is a past president of the Washington State Dental Hygienists’ Association (WSDHA). Lynn is also a member of the American Academy of Oral Systemic Health and a strong proponent of expanding work settings for dental hygienists.

CE#3 – Are You Sick and Tired of Waking up Sick and Tired? (3 CEU) Saturday, November 15, 2014 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Take a fresh simple look at the profound influence dietary and lifestyle choices have on overall health, with emphasis on inflammation and the disease process. Learn how progressive physicians are adopting the traditional dental hygiene model of disease prevention with inflammation as the marker. 2 Cindy Haas, RDHBS, CHHC transitioned from clinical dental hygiene practice to helping students prepare for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination as owner of Cindy Powell’s Board Review. With a strong interest in holistic care, Cindy became a Certified Holistic Health Coach through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in New York City where she learned a mind-body-spirit approach to wellness by the nation’s most progressive physicians. Cindy now owns Integrative Dental Concepts and Universal Health NW. Cindy is a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, the American Academy of Dental Hygiene and the Holistic Chamber of Commerce. Cindy has achieved level II Reiki attunement and recently authored Over the Lips and Through the Gums: A Holistic Guide to Oral Health.

CE #4 – The Challenge of Behavior Change (3 CEU) Saturday, November 15, 2014 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Sponsored by Crest Oral-B

Why is behavior change so difficult to achieve and maintain? This course will increase your understanding of why human behavior is so complex, and why dentistry has not generally been successful in facilitating long-term patient behavior change. How many times have you had to tell the same patient that ‘just brushing’ isn’t enough? Do your dental patients seem resistant or defensive when you provide advice and suggestions about their oral health practices? What is holding you back in changing your own health-related behaviors? Learn about behavior change theory and communication strategies utilizing the concepts of motivational interviewing as you view clinician-patient communication exchanges.

Terri Tilliss, RDH, PhD received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Dental Hygiene from the University of Iowa. She later earned an additional master’s degree in Counseling, and a PhD in Health and Behavioral Sciences, both from the University of Colorado. Dr. Tilliss was a faculty member in the Dental Hygiene Department at the University of Colorado, School of Dental Medicine for 27 years and Co- Chair for 5 years, until the program closed in 2009. She is currently a Professor in the Department of Graduate Orthodontics where she facilitates resident research projects, promotes an emphasis on oral hygiene and behavior change, and provides dental hygiene services to patients. She teaches in the university’s interdisciplinary professional education curriculum and teaches Communication and Behavior Change courses for dental residents and international dental students.

CE#5 – “Say Ahh” Open Wide to the Future (3 CEU) Saturday, November 15, 2014 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM

As more research confirms the link between oral health and general health, dental professionals are charged with the responsibility of assessing, treatment planning and educating patients about how the diseased state of their mouths impacts the rest of their body. The documentary “Say Ahh” will be featured followed by a discussion of how to move patients from where they are to where we want them to be – free from periodontal disease that can impact the quality of their lives. Come and learn how to answer the hard questions of “Why haven’t you told me about this before?” or “Will my insurance pay for this?” or “I just want the regular cleaning.” Say yes to opening wide to a future that validates the important work done by dental hygienists and the whole dental team.

CE#6 – A Review of Common and Important Oral Lesions (3 CEU) Saturday, November 15, 2014 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM

This course will review the diagnosis and management of the more common lesions that may be encountered on oral soft tissue examination. Less common but important lesions including malignancies and lesions associated with systemic disease will also be discussed. Since few oral lesions can be definitively diagnosed without further testing, the importance of developing a meaningful differential diagnosis will be emphasized. Discussion of lesions will be organized based on the key clinical features that aid in the development of a differential diagnosis. Clinical cases will be presented to illustrate the principles discussed.

Dr. Cindy Kleinegger earned her DDS degree from the University of Colorado, and then completed a one-year General Practice Residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. She completed an Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and earned an MS degree in Stomatology at the University of Iowa. Upon completion of her specialty training, Dr. Kleinegger joined the faculty of the University of Mississippi, School of Dentistry. She returned to the University of Iowa in 1996 where she was on the faculty for nine years and served as Director of the Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Dr. Kleinegger joined the faculty of Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry in 2005 and retired from OHSU in January 2014. Throughout her academic career, Dr. Kleinegger has practiced both surgical and clinical oral pathology. In April 2014, Dr. Kleinegger joined Northwest Oral Pathology where she continues to practice surgical oral pathology. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Expanded Practice Dental Hygiene Program Saturday, November 15, 2014 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM

This program will begin with exploring the background and history of the development of the expanded practice permit in Oregon. It will take a look at collaborative agreements and show how to successfully implement them, along with a discussion on insurance billing updates. We will look at the emerging health care changes and how the existing expanded practice dental hygiene models can make an impact treating underserved populations. A wide range of workforce models will be defined as audience members meet each panel member, learning about their unique practice settings, and listening to their stories. This promises to be a very motivational and inspirational course. Attendees will have an opportunity for questions and answers from all members of the panel.

Panel Speakers will include Lori Killen Aus RDH, EPP, Ann Ossinger, RDH, BSDH, EPP, Virginia Olea RDH, EPP, and Kathleen Marr Chitwood, RDH, EPP.

Dental Hygiene Student Program Saturday, November 15, 2014 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM This is a full-day program that will include a variety of presentations specifically designed for dental hygiene students. Lunch is included with this program.

4  Working with Dental Product Representatives This session will focus on working effectively with representatives from the dental products industry. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of using information and research provided by dental product representatives to help guide future dental hygiene practice. Students will be given time to actively engage with dental exhibitors to develop these skills.

 Professional Resumes This session will provide insight into resume development and how resumes should vary depending on the position.

 Keynote Address ADHA President Kelli Swanson Jaecks will discuss the future of the dental hygiene profession and how students can prepare now to work in an evolving health care system.

 Professional Issues Forum Students will have an opportunity to discuss a variety of professional issues during lunch.

 Marijuana: What Healthcare Professionals Should Know Sally Wiedeman RDH, BSDH, will discuss the oral and systemic effects caused by the use of marijuana as well as the dental implications for clinicians providing care to patients who use marijuana.

 What’s an Employer Looking For? A panel of employers from the dental field will discuss what they look for in a potential employee. The panel of employers will include a representative from private practice, public health, managed care organization, dental hygiene education and a temporary employment agency. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.
