The Summer Term S Upon Us Already and It S Going to Be Very Busy As the Children Prepare

Falcons Newsletter Autumn 2017

Welcome back to a new school year. It’s great to see the children ready and raring to learn from day one!

English The children will begin by learning about Ancient Roman myths and mythology, how they’re commonly written and how they can write their own. Following this, the children will learn how to write non-chronological reports. Each week the children will have a new writing focus to help support and develop their writing. We will start with sentence structure and how to write a variety of sentence types. Embedded throughout all the children’s writing development will be the fact that our writing should focus on the impact on, and interest of, our reader. Thereby enabling the children to use a wide variety of techniques in a skilful way.

Maths Maths will be learned in a very structured manner with each week’s new learning impacting and being built on by the next. We will begin by understanding place value up to tens of thousands and down to hundredths. To really secure the children’s understanding we will apply our new (and revised) learning in contexts such as money and measure. Whilst many of the children’s times tables skills seem good they will continue to learn all their times tables up to 12 x 12.

If you have the time to help your child at home with their mathematical understanding, such activities as baking (contextual learning) can be extremely helpful. In addition, practising times tables is never a wasted exercise! Once the children are secure with their times tables, doing them in reverse helps deepen their understanding – for example, 7 x 8 =56 can be used to know that 56 ÷ 8 = 7 and 56 ÷ 7 = 8.

Science The first half term the children will learn about the digestive system. The second half term will be materials and their properties, including changes of state. We will also be visiting Avenham Park to begin our longitudinal study on habitats (you will receive a letter advising about this). Falcons Newsletter Autumn 2017
