P.G DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

Khallikote Autonomous College is one of the oldest colleges of Odisha, established in the year 1856. The Department of English was established in the year 1878. The Department became P.G Department of English in 1963. Along with English Honours and P.G classes, the department also takes up “Compulsory English” classes for Arts, Science and Commerce streams. It also engages the Alternative English classes for Arts and Science UG classes.

Currently the department has three senior readers- Dr. Rachana Padhi (HOD), Dr. Kali Kinkar Pattanayak and Smt. Padmini Sahu. For 2015-16 academic session, the department selected Four Guest Faculties- Smt. Chinmayee Sahu, Mr. Pabitra Kumar Swain , Miss Deepshikha Routray, Madhusmita Swain and a retired Visiting Faculty Dr. Girija Mishra. All the four Guest Faculties have prior teaching experience and have an excellent track record. The total students strength are as follows:

Class No. of Students M.Phil 3 P.G 2nd Year 40 P.G 1st Year 40 + 3 Final Year 60 + 3 Second Year 60 + 3 First Year 60 On re-opening , after the summer vacations, classes had begun for P.G Second year- 3rd Semester and +3 Final Year (Hons)- 5th Semester Students and +3 Second Year (Hons)- 3rd Semester. The P.G- 1st Semester and U.G +3(Hons) First Semester classes began in August 2015, after admissions to both the classes were over.

The first activity of the department for 2015-16 session was the Welcome Function on 7 th September, 2015. The P.G- 1st Year and U.G- 1st Year students of the department were welcomed by the whole department. Apart from the staff, the function was attended by the Principal Dr. R. N Ratha and Officer on Special Duty, Dr. Manmath Padhi.

Ganesh Puja was celebrated by the department on 17th September, 2015. The new students got a chance to mingle with other students and staff of the department. Saraswati Puja was also celebrated by the Students of the Department on 12th February, 2016.

The department organized a State-level seminar on 6th and 7th of November 2015, under the able guidance of the Head of the Department, Dr. Rachana Padhi. In addition to it, the department also organized a State-level UGC sponsored seminar on 25th of February, 2016. The details of the seminar held are as follows:

Our reading room, a brainchild of Dr. Rachana Padhi was created within the department in December 2014, continues to be an excellent source of books on Literature. The wall-magazine keeps featuring creative outputs of students. The students have been greatly benefitted by the Reading Room. Besides the seminar activities, the department conducted creative writing, Literary Quiz and debate competition to nurture young minds and foster creativity.

The winners of various competitions were awarded on the Annual Day of the department on 25 th of February. The cultural activities showcased the hidden talent of the students of the department. A good spirit of camaraderie and teamwork was seen among students during the cultural extravaganza. The Farewell Function for the outgoing students of the department was celebrated with full fervor on 30 th March, 2016. Every year the Department offers a rich array of scholarly and cultural events.
