Band 5 Representation It was agreed that work was required on self nomination and the profile needed to be raised. Placing articles in BDA Ezine, monthly publication and/or “Dietetics Today” a full page article (approx. 750 words) would help raise the profile. Articles for the monthly electronic publication need to be submitted 2 weeks in advance and for Dietetics Today need to be submitted to RH by November 2014 to be published in the January 2015 edition. SL could add information about the practice placements work within Scotland to the larger Dietetics today article. KA/MM/RH/SL

Hot Topics JA to circulate the hot topic template for the group to add their suggestions. JA
4. Update from NES, including AHP Wide Advisory Forum
It was agreed that the minutes from the last NES AHP wide advisory forum should be circulated to the members of the Dietetic Sub Group as well as all future minutes. JA It is anticipated that the AHP strategy will be published by the end of 2014 and will be circulated to all AHPs.
There were 80 applicants in total for the Career Fellowship. The group requested a breakdown of which Health Boards were successful/unsuccessful. There is a Career Fellowship Newsletter available KA will liaise with Carol Curran for more information. KA
5. AHP NES Website
The website is currently being updated for the AHP team and members were asked to review the current website and feedback, in particular the section called ‘How We Listen to You’. It is anticipated that all future agenda and minutes be uploaded here for reference. The link to this webpage is http://www.nes.scot.nhs.uk/education-and-training/by-discipline/allied-health- professions/about-nes-allied-health-professions/nes-ahp-advisory-forums- and-think-tanks.aspx It was agreed this link should also be used in the news article when submitting the Band 5 article to the BDA (see item 3, bullet 1).
The group was asked to suggest specialist groups that will form an AHP Directory:
East & West BDA Branches Scottish Dietetic Alliance Scottish Board Scottish Renal Dietetic Group Scottish Dietitians Leadership Network Public Health Group AHP Children’s Services Forum Paediatric Dietitians Network
The group discussed creating a distribution list of contacts for all specialist groups but agreed that the management of such a large group would be too difficult to maintain it was agreed that as the BDA has a database of all members this would be the best way to communicate. RH will send an email out to all members asking if they know of any specialist Scottish groups that should be added to the website. A template will be circulated to all advisory group members to supply more information about the groups to be included in the database and to identify any others that are not listed above. RH/JA
It was suggested that the group membership along with a photo (optional) and a short paragraph about each member be uploaded along with the terms of reference. A copy of the terms of reference to be circulated to the group and a copy of the members biographies that were submitted when they joined the sub group. JA
6. Update from Advisory Group Members
JJ Updated group on work to develop learning outcomes for A, B and C placements which will come into effect from January 2016. Diversifying placement options discussed, Pete Glover from NES sits on the working group and keeping links with Practice Education Leads will be helpful to support the changes being implemented.
RH Advised project coming up for Practice Educators looking to develop breadth of placement locations/model – making it sustainable for future – changing manager’s mindset – BDA will be looking for people to sit on a working group who already have expertise and will take place in 2015. Also will be looking for case studies. RH will report back to the group when more information becomes available.
KA Advised that a shortlife working group on Peer Assisted Learning is currently being led by Mig Braid (AHP Practice Education Lead, NHS Fife) to evaluate how ‘PAL’ is being implemented within Scotland – the group has developed a questionnaire, which will be sent out shortly.
KA Care home placements –Currently a student from RGU on a ‘C’ placement within Highland is undertaking a proportion of the placement within a care home, with support from Care Home Nutrition adviser and practice educator from an acute setting. This could potentially form a case study for the BDA practice education work.
MM Raised frequency of practice educator updates and courses for new starts etc within Dietetics. Greater use of technology such as webinars etc to support practice educators would be welcome. KA to raise at pre-registration reference group.
Pre registration meeting to bring up proposal of webinar as a means of updating and introducing dietetic role. This would deal with geographical issues and would be applicable across the country.
DK Self referral pilot has been successfully evaluated. Presented a poster at NHS Highland AHP event in August 2014. Argyll and Bute are currently undertaking a review of a new behaviour change tool for health professionals which supports them in translating new knowledge into practice, which will be ready to evaluate by March/April 2015. Materials available to share at present with peers from self-referral pilot.
SL asked if the poster could be shared at the ‘Extended Role of the Dietitian’ East & West event in November 2014.
The group agreed as part of the National Delivery Plan AHPs should be sharing good practice and the work on the pilot was a prime example of sharing with peers.
FW Nutritional screening tool, resource can be shared, ongoing piece of work. FW will look to see if tool needs re evaluated/remodeled later this year.
JD Career Fellowship is well underway – competencies Band 3 (SQA level 7or8) support workers. Pulled together core competencies for reference and some comments were received on themes, communication and leadership. This could be linked to KSF dimensions to develop specific competences. Adapting and creating new workbooks due to finish mid March when they will be testing competencies at that stage. Long term goal is to role out in communities and share nationally.
LS Doing similar work to Jane on diabetes side. Moving away from one-to-one interventions for type2 and looking at more group education and self- referral/management options.
SS Shared information on placement learning outcome review.
JC Updated group on children and young peoples forum. Advanced practice for paediatric dietitians is important, particularly given that there will be reductions in the paediatric medical workforce through retirement that may not be possible to replace with consultants.
There is now a lead paediatric dietetic group established in Scotland.
A working group has been formed to develop proposals for meeting the educational needs of community Dietitians who have a paediatric work load. The first meeting took place in September in Stirling and there is a second meeting taking place in 2QC NES offices on 5th of November. JC has prepared an SBAR report and a survey monkey to gather the views and needs of community dietitians across Scotland.
FodMaps MM advised that a small working group from within the Dietetic Leadership Network has prepared an SBAR which defines the evidence relating to FODMAPS in the treatment of IBS, the activity with Scotland and what the potential benefits of increasing access to this intervention would be . There will be a targeted sharing of this SBAR which will make recommendations about access to training and education.
There are currently 13 dietitians working across 6 health board areas in Scotland that are on the King’s FodMaps register. The current access to training is prohibitive to the dietetic workforce in Scotland as it involves 3 days in London spread over a 6 month period.
MM has been in talks with Jacqui Lunday-Johnstone, Scottish Government with a view to creating a local pathway. The group discussed the potential of utilising a ‘train the trainers’ and running equivalent courses in Scotland but were aware that they would not be recognised on the King’s register. The BDA will discuss this issue further with King’s and explore other ways of bringing the training to Scotland. Nottingham/Coventry currently run a 2 day FodMap course independent of the King’s College.
RH will share Yvonne McKenzie’s blog by circulating the link to the group. RH
