DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Division of Communications and Public Information (DCPI) communicates UNEP's core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide. This post is located in UNEP/DCPI at the Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Head, Internet Unit, and the general guidance of the Director, DCPI, and in collaboration with the other UNEP divisional, regional and out-posted offices, the incumbent will be responsible for the design, content, maintenance and updates to the Climate and Clean Air Coalition website and other www.unep.org websites as required.

Under the general guidance of the Director DCPI and under the direct supervision of the Head, Internet Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties: a) Website content management and web/graphic design: • Website content management for the Climate and Clean Air Coalition. • Create designs, graphics, newsletter, layouts for print, online, and multimedia applications or products for the Climate and Clean Air Coalition. • Provide website content management, design, animation and multimedia production services and support to UNEP-DCPI activities as directed by the Division Director. • Develop of various web, graphic designs and animations for www.unep.org and affiliated websites. • Update relevant and interesting web pages designed according to UNEP Guidelines. • Design and develop web pages on www.unep.org in accordance with UNEP guidelines, with close direction from the supervisor. • Enhance visual identity and coherence of UNEP’s websites. • Contribute substantively to the achievement of UNEP’s main goals in the field of web design and development, content management and information dissemination. b) Assist with the following specific products: • Climate and Clean Air Coalition template/branding/promotional material development. • Develop online, print, animation and multimedia products for DCPI-led websites and initiatives. • Develop logos and branding templates and applications for UNEP initiatives as requested by other Divisions. c) UNEP.org website migration: P.315 (3-09) • Provide support for the migration of all www.unep.org websites into a new hosting environment. • Support in planning and preparation to ensure a smooth migration of data. • Manage content and reformat where necessary to comply with the new technical environment. • Assist in page-by-page migrations of static websites into CMS websites where applicable. d) Perform other related duties as assigned.

2 P.315 (3-09) For Managerial Positions:

QUALIFICATIONS Experience: A minimum of seven years experience, four of which should be practical experience in content management systems, graphic and web design, development of mobile applications and practical experience in the migration of web applications, or related field. Working experience in the United Nations would be an advantage.

Education: Completion of secondary education or equivalent is required. Additional technical training in Information Technology, Computer Science or similar related field. Experience in communications is highly desired.

Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage. .

Other Skills: Excellent computer skills (Microsoft office, email) are required; • Working knowledge of content management systems including Dot Net Nuke and Drupal • Strong graphic design and desktop publishing ability using a variety of graphics software including Adobe Photoshop, PageMaker, Fireworks, Illustrator and Freehand. • Strong programming training, technical knowledge and experience in C, C++, Visual Basic, Java, as well as scripting languages; JavaScript, ASP, PHP and Flash Actionscript. • Excellent knowledge, understanding and experience in several operating systems; Windows 7, Windows Vista, XP, Windows 2000, Windows ME, NT, SE, 98 SE, 98, 95, Ubuntu Linux and OpenSuse Linux. • Strong database administration knowledge and skill using Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle and Microsoft Access. Good understanding of networks, including networking standards DNS, SMTP and POP, and web-related standards HTTP, HTML and XML..

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

Special Notice Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures. This position is funded for an initial period of 12 months and may be subject to extension.

Note :

While this temporary assignment will provide the successful applicant with an ideal opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

Internal candidates for this purpose is defined as staff members currently serving under 100 series appointment who have been recruited after a competitive examination under staff rule 104.15 or after the advice of a Secretariat joint body under staff rule 104.14. External applicants may be considered when it is not possible to identify suitable internal candidates of the same department/office.
