Please read & learn the safety rules below. I must have your parent-signed safety contract on file and you must pass a safety quiz before you can do any labs.
1. Read and follow all directions carefully, especially when you see the word CAUTION.
2. Never do lab work if the teacher isn’t there and never do unauthorized extra experiments.
3. Never run, push or engage in horseplay of any kind in the lab.
4. Never eat, drink or chew gum in the laboratory, and NEVER taste, touch or smell substances in the lab without specific instructions to do so. When smelling things use the wafting method.
5. Keep your work area clean and clear of unnecessary material. Place everything not needed for the lab in the designated area.
6. Dispose of materials as instructed, including recycled materials. Be sure you know what you are doing before pouring anything into the sink.
7. Report ANY accident, spill or breakage immediately. Warn others of hazards. Do not attempt to clean up broken glass yourself.
8. Always clean up your work area and equipment at the end of the period.
9. Dress properly: a. Roll up long sleeves to above the wrist. b. Don’t wear loose fitting or bulky clothing on lab day. c. Tie back long hair. d. Wear safety goggles when using dangerous or hot chemicals or burners. e. Remove jewelry that might get in the way.
10. Use care when working with electricity: a. Keep cords away from table edges so they don’t get accidentally yanked. b. Make sure your hands and the entire area are totally DRY before touching electrical equipment, plugs or cords.
11. Be careful with glassware: a. Check glassware before use. Give chipped or cracked glassware to the teacher. b. Never clean up broken glass with bare hands. Tell the teacher.
12. Be careful with heat or fire: a. Use tongs or heat resistant gloves to handle hot materials. b. Never reach over an open flame or heat source or leave one unattended. c. Heat liquids slowly to avoid splattering. d. Never place flammable materials such as alcohol near a heat source. e. Tell the teacher immediately about a burn. f. Never heat a stoppered test tube or point its mouth toward someone when heating. g. Never look directly at any lamps or the sun, even with sunglasses or a filter. Damage to your eyes can occur without you knowing it.
13. Be careful with chemicals: a. Use only material from correctly labeled containers. b. Never mix substances unless instructed to do so. c. Wash your hands thoroughly after using chemicals or handling minerals. If you spill anything on your skin or eyes, wash with running water or use the eyewash (located in Mr. Puopolo’s room) and notify the teacher. d. Tell the teacher about any chemical spills.
14. Make sure that you know the evacuation route to the outside of the building. This is the same route that you would take for a fire drill.
