Minutes, University Committee for General Education

Meeting #9, 2008; March 20, 2008

Present: Marc Klowden, Charles Tibbals, Pat Hart, Nick Jorgenson, Michael O’Rourke, Chris Williams, Mark DeSantis, Robert Caisley, Jean Henscheid, Lauren Fins, Karen Humes and Jeanne Christiansen.

The meeting was call to order by Gary Williams at 3:30pm. It was moved and seconded to approve the minutes from the last meeting.

New Business:

There are 3 scheduled UCGE meetings on April 3, April 17 and May 1st. Gary asked the committee if they thought there were items that needed to be discussed for three more meetings or should the committee just meet one more time. It was decided to meet on April 17.

Gary announced that on Thursday, April 24th at 12:30 pm in the Commons Clearwater Room, a campus-wide discussion on the future of interdisciplinary curricula is scheduled. UCGE members should be on hand if their schedules permit.

Consideration of proposals for humanities list:

Thef 468 Thef 469 Thef 105

Motion was made to approve all courses (C. Williams/DeSantis) to the humanities list. There was discussion on Thef 105 (Basics of Performance), several members opining that the course doesn’t meet all aspects of criteria. O’Rourke/Fins amended motion to approve both Thef 468 and 469 for the humanities list and not to approve Thef 105. Motion passed unanimously.

Consideration of proposals for social science list: Thef 386 Motion was made to approve (Fins/C. Williams) the addition of Thef 386 to social science list. Several committee members felt that the social science aspects of the course were insufficiently described. It was decided to send back proposal to Anna Banks to clarify the social sciences aspects and see why she proposed as a social science course and not humanities. Motion was made (Fins/C/ Williams) to table the proposal. Motion passed.

Bus 101 Motion was made to not approve (Hart/Klowden). Motion passed. Bus 321 Committee decided to send proposal back and ask for clarification on how the course fits as a social science course and its 6 prerequisites can be justified. Motion was made to not approve (Humes/C. Williams) Bus 321, 311 and 429. The committee was concerned with the variable credits and prerequisites. (Fins/Hart) made motion to table. Motion passed. UCGE Chair will invite representatives of the College of Business to the April 17 meeting to defend the proposals.

Consideration of proposals for international list: Thef 404/504 Asian Theatre History Thef 221 & 222 Motion was made to approve (O’Rourke/Fins) the addition of Thef 404/504, Thef 221 & 222 to international list. Motion passed.

FCS 411 Motion was made to approve (Fins/Caisley) the addition of FCS 411 to international list. Motion passed.

Meeting adjourned at 5:00pm.
