The Meeting Was Very Well Attended with Members and Their

The meeting was very well attended with members and their partners coming from far and wide. It was great to see so many familiar faces. Viv, G1IXE and Ivor, G1IXF had spent all day decorating the hall, fitting the Christmas lights and putting out all the tables and chairs for the event then preparing the excellent buffet and bar. Every year the STVG Committee makes a donation to local Amateur Radio groups and this year the lucky recipients were the Bristol 70 cms Repeater Group and the Frys Hill Repeater Group. Following the presentation of the donations, the raffle was held and some very lucky people won same top quality prizes! After the excellent buffet an auction of surplus equipment was held and there were bargains galore as many varied items were snapped up by STVG members. Mel, the girls and I were made very welcome at the meeting. The girls made up balloon animals while wearing their flashing Christmas hats and we all had plenty to eat from the buffet and drinks bar. Ellen and Catherine even had a winning raffle ticket! The donation to the Frys Hill Group is very gratefully received and will go towards supporting the existing repeater network operated by the group on two sites, one near Cheddar in Somerset and another on Dundry near Bristol. Each site contains two repeaters, one 50MHz and one

430MHz.Currently two 50MHz repeaters (GB3FH and

GB3ZY) are linked via the internet and provide excellent

6m mobile coverage from Exeter to beyond Gloucester in a North/South direction and from Bridgend in Wales to

Swindon in an East/West direction.

Plans are in hand to link the two 430MHz repeaters GB3FI and GB3ZB. More information about the Frys Hill Repeater Group can be found at: http://www.gb3fh.org.uk The repeaters are linked using the internet and Asterisk based application called app_rpt. More information on this Internet linking technology can be found at www.allstarlink.org More info about the Severnside Television Group can be found on their web site www.stvg.co.uk The group operates 2 TV repeaters, one on 23cm from Filton and the other on 3cm from Dundry. The West of England Radio Rally, organised by the STVG, takes place on Sunday 27th June this year at Frome in Somerset. For more info about the rally, see the dedicated rally web site at: http://www.westrally.org.uk I would like to extend my personal thanks to Viv, Ivor and the STVG team for all that they do for the hobby in this area. It takes dedication and commitment to do what they do and spend the time and effort in putting on events like the West of England Radio Rally and the Christmas Social evening in addition to running the TV repeaters from the sites in Filton and on Dundry. FCC approves use of (A)TV for Police Use Gordon West (WB6NOA) announced the FCC approval of (A)TV on 70 cm, 900 MHz and 1200 MHz by the Police right here in Southern California during the net this week.

The TV will be used most likely by the Police on devices or remote controlled vehicles in areas that it would be hard to get a police office into safely. And it is my understanding that Hams will not be operating the equipment.

They will be using 1 watt transmitters 6 MHz wide and this is to help prevent interfering with the local ATV repeaters and most likely not key up the repeaters.

434 MHz will be where Southern California ATVers might find problems with this new tool for our Police. ______Digital-ATV ______

DATV Question

Hi Bryon

For the ATV Newsletter under the Digital headline.

When using DATV on 70cm, 436.00 MHz we use an up converter to convert 70cm to L Band to enable the signal to be received on a satellite receiver.

This means building an up converter or buying one ready made, quite costly.

There are UHF to L Band up converters available sometimes on Eaby for $10 to $20 These have been used in the US

Cable TV networks for viewing Digital TV sent on the cable at UHF on a regular satellite receiver.

One example of this is the Glencom VC510. This has a

LO frequency of 1,950 MHz so that 436 MHz is converted to 1,514 MHz It requires minor modification to remove the cable coupling components and it is then ideal for feeding a digital satellite receiver from the up converted 70cm signal.

My question is do any of you know where to get these surplus cable TV up converter from?

Please let Bryon know for the next issue,

Cal Trans Pipe Specifications

 All pipes should be equipped with a round hole,

surrounded by metal or plastic centered around

the hole.

 The pipe is to be hollow throughout the entire

length and do not use holes of different lengths

than the pipe.

 The inside diameter of all pipes must not exceed

the outside diameter.

 All pipes to be supplied with nothing in the hole

so that water, steam or other stuff can be put

inside at a later stage.

 All pipes should be supplied without rust as this

can be readily applied at the job site. Some vendors are now able to supply pre-rusted pipes.

If available in your area it will save a lot of time

on the job site.

 All pipes over 150 m in length should have "long pipe"

clearly printed on each end so that the Contractor

will know that it is a long pipe.

 Pipes over 3 km must have the words "very long pipe"

clearly painted on each end so that the Contractor

will not have to walk the entire length to determine

whether it is a "long pipe" or a "very long pipe".

 All pipes over 150 mm in diameter must have

the words "large pipe" painted on it so that the

Contractor will not mistake it for a small pipe.

 When ordering 90 degree, 45 degree or 30 degree

elbows, be sure to specify right hand or left hand;

otherwise you will end up going the wrong way.

 Be sure to specify to your vendor whether you

want level, uphill or downhill pipe. If you use

downhill pipe for going uphill, the water will flow

the wrong way.

Santiago 2.4 Fixed Just as Dave, KA6DPS diagnosed as the problem on Santiago, the fuse on the 2.4 GHz preamp needed to be replaced and the antenna was tilted off vertical.

I saw WB9KMO, Rod operating mobile-ATV coming down from Santa Barbara midday on Saturday. And later in the evening I saw Dave give a final signal report on the repairs around 12:30 AM Sunday morning.

Rod and Mike also tuned the cavities and rebuilt the power supply. All in all they spent 6.5 to 7 hours working on the repeater well into the night.

Point Loma 434 Unusable It was heard that Mike Collis said that because of the government use of the frequencies of 434 MHz and frequencies close to 434 in the San Diego area that the 434 MHz input on Point Loma is unusable.

______Repairs Needed for the ATN-CA Repeaters ______Blueridge: 1. Establish link from Mt. Potosi 2. Repair 900 MHz output transmitter and reinstall 3. Get repeater back on the air. Mt Wilson: Saw testing on 3/21/10.on 434 MHz and it was working Oat Mtn.: 1. Replace plastic wire ties with appropriate fasteners. 2. Tune 2.4 GHz link dipole for better SWR. It would be a good idea to sweep the 1200 MHz antenna at the same time as well. Santiago Peak: 1. Remove KC6UQH's call and Palomar from the W6ATN repeaters ID's (late spring early summer 08 when the new controller is installed) 2. Look into weak signal getting into one of the inputs. 3. Find intermittent receive problem for link from Oat Mtn..(1/24/09) 4. Resolve problems with WiFi getting into receiver for Snow Peak & Point Loma (April 28, 2009) Snow Peak: 1. 2.4 Ghz input is operational but has audio problems due to receiver problems on the network hub.. July 23, 2009 2. The 1200 MHz output does work and you can watch. 3. Get repeater back on the air. Point Loma, W6RDF: No Repairs Needed/Fully Operational Trustee Robert Swain, KA4JSR 1.
