GENERAL INFORMATION

Participating in cheerleading is an exciting and fun experience. However, it requires a HUGE amount of time and commitment by all members, not only during the school year but the summer as well. As a member of the cheer squad you will be required to cheer at football, volleyball, girls and boys basketball throughout the school year. This means cheering 2 to 3 nights per week. If you are on varsity or the competition team, you could cheer as many as 4 nights during basketball season. Cheerleaders do more than cheer at games; they make posters and team treats, plan assemblies, and have other various responsibilities as they support the athletic teams at BHS. You will also be required to attend practices during the summer. If you are going to participate on the cheer squad it is important to know and understand what kind of commitment will need to be made and that cheer must be a top priority.

Bingham cheerleaders are a highly competitive group. Throughout the year there are usually five competitions that the BHS cheerleaders attend. Most of the competitions are done through United Sprit Association, because of cost, professionalism, and location. USA nationals are held at the end of March in Anaheim, CA. This competition is Friday and Saturday with finals being held on a Sunday. If a cheerleader is uncomfortable with competing on Sunday, they will NOT be an active part of the competition team. Cheerleader will be an alternate, if a situation arises during the year. There will be a POSSIBILITY that we will be attending nationals in Florida instead. That will depend on motivation and talent of group and adequate fundraising.

ONCE YOU MAKE A CHEERLEADING SQUAD YOU MAY NOT OPT OUT. PLEASE REMEMBER THERE ARE MANY GIRLS WHO WOULD LOVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CHEER. IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO MAKE THIS KIND OF COMMTIMENT FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR, DO NOT TRY OUT. IF YOU DID CHOOSE TO QUIT DURING THE YEAR, YOU WILL RECEIVE AN “F” ON YOUR GRADE, AS YOU “FAILED” TO FINISH YOUR COMMITMENT TO THE TEAM.

TRYOUT GUIDELINES - Hair pulled back, we MUST see your face (pony tails) - No jewelry, no gum, no exception (belly button rings, etc.) - Wear workout clothes, form fitting shirts and shorts (no jeans, sweats, or baggy clothes - Be on time- stay the entire time (freshman DO NOT check out of school early, be at Bingham no later than 3:15) - Work hard and have fun

SQUAD NUMBERS -TBA JV squad 8-20 members (sophomores and juniors) Varsity squad 16-36 members (sophomores, juniors, and seniors)

THESE NUMBERS ARE BASED ENTIRELY ON HOW MANY GIRLS TRYOUT. WE WILL DETERMINE HOW MANY SQUADS, AND HOW MANY MEMBERS FOR EACH SQUAD BY DRAWING A LINE AT A CLEAR BREAK IN JUDGING POINTS. REMEMBER WE ARE NOT LOOKING AT INDIVIDUALS; THE GOAL IS TO PUT TOGETHER WELL ROUNDED TEAMS.

FINANCIAL COMMTIMENT/FUNDRAISERS The approximate cost is $360.00 for camp, $250.00 for uniforms, and $300.00 for optional items (Spirit Pack) such as camp wear, bags, warm-ups etc. This does not include competition. We will have a fundraising committee that will provide and supervise over all the fundraisers. If you plan to fundraise any money, one parent per girl will be required to be on the fundraising committee. The past few years our most successful fundraisers have been the stunt-a-thon, garage sale, the B-book, and Happenings Books. The B-book is a mandatory for everyone. The fundraising committee can provide as many as fundraisers as they would like. If you work hard on the fundraisers provided, it is possible to earn all of the money due. We will also have a mandatory car wash, in which all proceeds will go toward our cheer fund. This fund is used for buses, upkeep on our mats, paints, stereos, music, and other supplies needed. Excess money that individuals fundraise will remain in the cheerleading account!

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT

Cheerleading is a very physical and demanding sport. You must be in good health and top physical condition. If you have any pre-existing injuries that might limit your abilities on a team, please take these into consideration before trying out. It is imperative that our teams are in top condition due to the strenuous demands of stunting and tumbling. Many times you may be injured and will still have to push through and cheer, so it is very important to understand the importance of good health.

TRYOUT REQUIREMENT

STUNT- You will be chosen based upon potential positions: Flyers, bases, and back-spots.

TUMBLING- A standing back handspring on the floor is required (no mat). You may also show a standing back tuck or a standing back handspring back tuck. Running tumbling passes will also be worth a separate point value. This is the minimum tumbling required, but we will be looking for more advanced tumbling.

TRYOUT REQUIREMENT FOR ALL SQUADS We are looking for well-rounded skills in tumbling, jumps, motion technique, and dance. If you try out with a tumbling pass, it will be recorded and will be a grade requirement for the entire year, including basketball season on the gym floor. We are looking for spirit, enthusiasm, and attitude as well. It is a priority that all girls on the squad be great leaders for Bingham.
